Sometimes I wonder whether the last holdouts were just doing their best to avoid going back to that world. Have you ever read Shigeru Mizuki's Showa Era comics? (You can get the series pretty cheap secondhand on eBay.) He served during WWII in Papa New Guinea, and it's one of the few critical narratives from a Japanese perspective that recognizes war crimes like Nanking.
