in reply to Glyph • • •extremely stupid question, does the mac have WiFi on? I’ve seen (via per-interface metrics) Finder use an active WiFi cxn for SMB to my Synology despite the system being configured to prefer Ethernet, and despite many other apps correctly doing so.
(The fact that your “slow” speed is near gigabit implies this isn’t it, but worth mentioning! Also I guess WiFi is fast these days)

in reply to Jeff Forcier • • •@bitprophet I know! I was surprised too. It's not totally deterministic, but it generally seems to be in the right state whenever I go to check. More often, I have to manually connect to the relevant AP when I disconnect, but that's fine, I rarely want to use WiFi. But notably, doing it this way means:
- I leave the WiFi *on*, even though it's disconnected, so location services still work
- "disconnect" is different from "forget" so I can always one-click connect without entering a password
