Every year, I set a reasonable-for-me reading goal. It’s one I can easily reach without trying hard, as long as I don’t get stuck spending too many hours on social media

Some years I’m off pace in the fall, and that’s an excuse to go looking for graphic novels and children’s picture books. Both of those are kinds of books I enjoy but tend to forget to look for, so it’s a great excuse to go read what I want to explore anyway

in reply to Violinknitter

I really enjoy setting an annual reading goal and evaluating my progress at year-end. It's not really about quantity, but more about consistency. I think that I maxed out the first year of my semi-retirement, or possibly the first year of COVID.

Privacy is dead, and no personal consumer choices will bring it back. Only strongly enforced regulation will have a chance at rolling back the damage done. Step one is getting big money out of elections. Repeal Citizens United.

According to US NEWS & WORLD REPORT, we (Oklahoma) currently stand 48th in education, nationally speaking.

usnews.com/news/best-states/ok…

Oklahoma has always been iffy on education; my opinion is that it's Asimov 's Anti-Intellectualism Theory* on full display. We never have enough teachers. We never have enough state funding (unless the school in question is in a wealthy district). Voters select school leaders who are more interested in their religio-fascist agendas...

Thankfully, we've been liberated from the bizarre, self-aggrandizing, nationalist-Christian disaster that was (& is, I assume) Ryan Walters.

Dr. Jamie Polk, our OKCPS district superintendent, remains focused on education, committed to students' well-being, and steadfast against "anti-woke" pressuring.

I have no illusions that Oklahoma 's dismal education rankings will improve dramatically before my kid finishes high school...although it's nice to dream.

But still, I have high hopes that the next few years *will* bring tangible, beneficial changes.

We CAN have good things, Oklahoma! We just have to vote for proven excellence, proven compassion, and proven emphasis on the betterment of humanity.

*Asimov 's Anti-Intellectualism Theory (nobody calls it that afaik, I just made it up):

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'"

I pulled my youngest out of public school - he had been in AP math and science - and they shut down the programs.

Mercifully, my ex-wife was a working ps teacher with two master's degrees - the district didn't give us any trouble. Spent a fortune on a Mac and Mathematica, off he went, to places I'll never go in math.

The problem with public schools: because they're funded with property taxes, they become political. The Christian Taliban knows that angle really well, they've run their own schools since desegregation.

Honestly, trying to get competent, dedicated teachers is not hard, even with the crap wages they pay. It's the nasty, internecine policy fights, all these politicians acting as if they're God's great gift to education...

Khan Academies teach reasoning skills at early stages, that graduate to more sustainable adults than single solve, lowest common denominator math that cripples mindsets early.

You might not notice it in your peer group, when you are not their age, but my daughter showed me that many 20-30yr olds are switching to dumb phones, are cancelling their Facebook/tiktok/twitter accounts and are discovering libraries and printed books. As a conscious decision. Not all of them, but quite a lot and it's growing.

Switching to dumb phones sounds tempting til you realize Linux phones could actually fix the problem better.

#NMwx #graphicast The first snowfall of the winter season is coming to south central and southeast NM late tonight into Monday night. The area of highest confidence in our expected snowfall amounts is from Ruidoso southeast to Dunken and Elk. Roadways will become snow-packed and icy, making for difficult to potentially severe driving conditions.

Just like Europeans mess up Asian food, it was the opposite there...
