“The #EuropeanUnion, hit for the first time by higher US #tariffs since #Trump returned to the White House, retaliated within hours with countermeasures on US goods exports.” #TrumpTax

I just got hit with a 20% increase in my car insurance from State Farm. The reason - increased cost of repairs.

People are so overly focused on the price of fk'ing eggs that they aren't seeing the broader picture of what Trump is costing us in real time.

I had to buy 4 new tires yesterday. They were manufactured in Mexico. Fortunately, those had not increased in price yet.

That said, I fully support counter tariffs from other countries.

in reply to Support the Resistance

@PattyHanson what infuriates me even more is that he is conditioning his people to not only accept all price increases but to think of them as patriotic and short term pain that will lead to an economic Xanadu that will never happen
in reply to Support the Resistance

@PattyHanson
The last couple of times that I purchased groceries, it's been almost twice as expensive compared to when Biden was president and I didn't even buy eggs

Someone needs to crack cryogenic freezing so we can persuade all of those able to afford it to go on ice. Win-win. They get to feel superior and like they're going forwards to a new utopia and we can be rid of them. Then perhaps we can all sneak off to another planet without them, and hopefully while they sleep chickens will evolve back into dinosaurs and upon waking, eat them. Win-win-win (including the ole dino's).
in reply to Ben

Nah. As soon as they've all gone on ice, just weld the doors shut, and get on with your lives in peace.
in reply to bytebro

@bytebro You've solved it!

We tell them we've cracked cryogenics, maybe get one of their crappy AI things to write a few intellectual sounding papers about it.

Then we start a business offering it, and here's the clincher: to prove how serious we are and how important this is, it's very, VERY expensive. So much so that only the billionaires can afford it.

So we take all their money, throw them all into a warehouse full of chest freezers, lock the door and walk out to applause from the entire world.

Seriously, if you've got plans to come to the United States this year on a matter which is not absolutely essential, please cancel the ticket and get a refund.

If they're non-refundable, still ... consider the lost money a small price to pay for your safety.

The risks are too great right now.

No, the last person at DOE should not delete the database because DOE sends that information to loan servicers who have it. The last person should somehow send out to the loan servicers that the loans have been paid and then delete the database.

Welp, Breakthrough Energy, a climate change organization funded by Bill Gates, is downsizing its operations, including its US policy team and European unit. This shift reflects Gates’s strategic decision to focus on building clean energy companies rather than influencing policy, particularly in the current political climate.

I bet most Americans have no idea what the Department of Education really does. They’re about to find out the hard way.

Something I'd like to see in writing a lot more often:
"More than 1,600 American children have died of Covid - nearly 80% of them after in-person learning resumed in 2021 - but we talk about their experience of Covid now primarily in terms of school closings and learning loss."

I saw #InTheLostLands last night. The plot is a bit thin, stretched from a GRRRRR Martin short story. I liked it visually and I thought the two leads did well with the material. The sound has the compression problem too typical of movies with wide dynamic range. Overall I enjoyed it much more than reviews would lead you to expect.

I'm really getting sick of having to keep turning off Apple Intelligence every time one of my devices updates, which they do fairly frequently. Apple needs to respect their customers' choices and stop this crap now.

thank you for the phenomenal reporting on this! My jaw is on the floor after seeing Signal and ProtonMail on the list. But also: GIPHY and VSCO - what?

Notably absent are Fediverse platforms. And honestly this is the biggest motivation for going one step further and self-hosting (it feels like an additional protective shield)

Fuck it man, idk. Just put on some Grateful Dead. Put on some Aretha. Print some kind of zine. Paint a sign. Start a band. Write a manifesto. Bootleg a t-shirt. Hand out stickers. Throw a party. Keep it weird.

Every day I find a brand-new little horror that's been happening in US agriculture. After a lifetime of collecting ag horrors. ok throw it on the video essay pile with the other 200 that are waiting I guess

Anyway here's today's fresh horror! I think you will like it!

in reply to Sarah Taber

Anyway, I'm thinking a lot about how foodies spent the last 30 years lecturing poor people on "making wise choices with their food dollars."

They should have been counseling landowners on making wise choices with their property.

in reply to Sarah Taber

A food card I get from my health insurance gives a monthly allowance for food, but only "healthy food". Puts me in a state of concern on if my choices as being healthy are actually healthy and thus paid for.

#Politics It just occurred to me that Trump is utilizing the same tactics as Marxists have used to recruit people to their cause. You start the cry of "they're ripping us off, they're getting wealthy at our expense, down with the pigs, etc. Then once you have them all worked up to a frenzy, they'll follow you anywhere, and you can control them like sheep. This a brand new opinion on my part, so maybe I have it a little wrong, heck, maybe I have it all wrong.
in reply to Bruce Toews

That’s actually pretty spot on. #FDR called it government by organized mob, though to be fair he was describing something a little different. But it is absolutely the mob mentality. If you’ve ever found yourself on the wrong side of an online mob, as I unfortunately have, you have a bit of a taste. The mob can do no wrong, even when they’re wrong.

Elderly lady blew me a kiss!

I was out on my lunch. As I returned to my parked car, I noticed a large SUV struggling to reverse out of their parking spot.

I walked in front of the SUV and calmly waved and talked the tiny lady through backing out and turning the wheel and exiting.

Before she drove off, she smiled and blew me a kiss 😀

That could be someone's grandma or mom.

I hope they tell the story about the handsome brown man with beard who helped her - emphasis on handsome of course!

Three Hollywood movies were released in 1995 with internet themes: the Keanu Reeves cyberpunk film Johnny Mnemonic (with an accompanying website), The Net with Sandra Bullock, and Hackers. As well as these 3 films, I look back at William Gibson's now extinct mid-90s website, "William Gibson’s Yardshow", and the equally lost to time Johnny Mnemonic net.hunt, an online scavenger hunt. cybercultural.com/p/cyberspace… #InternetHistory #90smovies
