Speaking from here in the fediverse, I don’t think any of us particularly want commercial ads or data collection. Just saying in case they get any ideas

Ubuntu to replace classic coreutils and more with new Rust-based alternatives

After so much terrible tech politics news, let's focus on some nice, easy-going Linux news that's not going to be controversial at all: Ubuntu intends to replace numerous core Linux utilities with newer Rust replacements, starting with the ubiquitous GNU Coreutils.

Just means they need the media to downplay the high level of subservience everyone is giving to Trump in his apparent intimacies with Putin that make Russia a newfound friend to MAGA and the USA. A ruse.

Rep Jamie Raskin is encouraging people to send in #FOIA requests to #DOGE to demand an enumeration of what the department knows about each requester. Since DOGE is an official government agency, they are obliged to respond to these requests per the Federal Privacy Act of 1974. US District Judge Casey Cooper has affirmed this as well in a recent ruling.

An explanation of the campaign, and a form letter ready for your customization is found here: jamieraskin.com/doge-privacy-a…

in reply to Dave Rahardja

isn't this likely to just make them annoyed at FOIA and stop processing them altogether? I'm leery of strategies based on the assumption that they have to follow "the rules".
in reply to Christopher Batty

@topher_batty
Agreed, but then every rule not followed is yet another attack surface in the courts. And they will of course try to weasel out of court orders or ignore them, but that too takes work. No single grain of sand in the gears is the one that brings the whole machine down.

I found this site that lets you draw icebergs and see how they would float (joshdata.me/iceberger.html?fbc…) - I was looking for visualizations of the iceberg metaphor for behavior, how we only see 10% of what someone is really going through. It’s a great resource for that and also now I’m distracted seeing how an iceberg shaped like a cat would float.

While I feel more natural typing over handwriting, I must admit moving my journaling to handwriting has been a positive.

Less stream of consciousness writing, requiring more deliberate and slow thinking.

This week, the Trump administration cancelled all grant programs under the Violence Against Women Act. These grants fund most court protective order programs.

At the same time, Trump declares you are a domestic terrorist if you deface a Tesla.

Literally, a swasticar has more legal protection than a woman now.

What's with mastodon search? For example, I can't search for hashtags to find people with similar interests. Frustrating

@FediTips do you have a thought on this? Anyone else know if I'm missing something?

in reply to ts 🚉

Finding people works a bit differently on here as there deliberately isn't a central search engine (because someone nasty might take it over).

I've tried to do a guide for all the methods for discovering people to follow on here:

fedi.tips/how-do-i-find-accoun…

If your server's search isn't giving you interesting results, you might want to try methods such as Fediverse directories or Fediverse groups as these methods are both server-neutral.

in reply to Fedi.Tips

thanks, but I'm still confused. One thing this page says is, "You can find a lot of interesting accounts nowadays just by typing keywords into the search box on Mastodon." But search does NOT (in my experience) search the text of a profile. Said text must be in the handle or display name - super limited.
in reply to ts 🚉

I had a look at your server's website, and it seems they don't have advanced search features installed. The advanced search requires the admin to install an add-on (called "elasticsearch"), but this costs extra so some admins don't install it.

You might want to ask your admin about this to make sure?

Because this place doesn't spy on users or run adverts, every server admin has to cover their server's costs and usually relies on donations from users to keep going.

in reply to ts 🚉

not trying to complain - I might just be too old or not tech-y enough for the Fediverse. Appreciate your help
in reply to ts 🚉

I don't think you have to be any particular age or skill level to use this place.

It can take a bit of time to get used to though as it is such a different structure. I hope I can help as the aim of my account is specifically to assist non-technical people 🙂
