Are the air raid sirens a relatively new installation, or are they relics from the old days?
I ask because in the UK, our WW2 air raid sirens later got converted to "imminent nuclear attack" sirens, and then after the end of the Cold War they were all dismantled. Except in a few specific cases: some coastal towns or other places prone to flooding have them for that purpose, and I believe they are still in place in towns close to our nuclear power stations.
But personally I haven't heard a siren go off since the mid-1980s when they used to regularly test them to supposedly warn us if the Russians were coming.
Thanks. Yeah it was the old WW2 style sirens that I remember from my 1980s childhood as the nuclear war warning. Although I think by then they played a recording of the sound over loudspeakers.
That sound still gives me the creeps, I can't imagine what it was like for the older generation who remembered it from when the bombs were about to drop in WW2.
