Just to be clear, this is the ambassador FROM South Africa, the official representative of the South African government to the US. He works for the South African government, not the US government.
Diplomatic expulsions at the ambassador level are extremely rare, generally reserved either for diplomats caught violating laws (spies), or when relations with the country are deteriorating extremely badly, as a step before closing the embassy altogether.
Diplomacy around expulsions is generally tit-for-tat. That is, the predictable, almost required, response by South Africa will be to expel the US ambassador.
An "Ambassador" is the the chief diplomat sent abroad to represent a country to another country, and can generally negotiate and communicate on its behalf.
A "Chargé d'Affaires" is an official empowered to act in the role of ambassador when there is no current ambassador. (Some countries don't use the "ambassador" title.)
A "Consul" is a foreign diplomat who represents their country in some area, such as trade or providing expat services.
A "Diplomatic Mission" is an officially recognized outpost of a country abroad. It includes embassies, consulates, and other specialized offices such as trade representives
An "Embassy" is the main diplomatic mission in a country, where its ambassador works and communicates with the host country's government.
A "Consulate" provides services and information to individuals, such as processing visas.
A "Chancery" is (approximately) another term for embassy.
and a “High Commission” is the equivalent of an Embassy, but where both mission and the place where it is are members of the Commonwealth. Its leader is a High Commissioner.
Diplomats (including ambassadors) and diplomatic missions have to be recognized and accepted by the host country, which can reject them or expel them at will (but, again, rejection or expulsion is very unusual among countries on even moderately good terms).
Diplomats and missions have "diplomatic immunity", which means they can't be searched or detained, nor can their vehicles or residences. But a diplomat who goes on a crime spree is likely to be expelled.
The US is a special case as a host county, because not only do countries have ambassadors, embassies and consulates here, but they also have ambassadors and diplomatic missions to the UN in NYC. The US government has less discretion about rejecting or expelling foreign diplomats assigned to the UN, generally only for specific cause (such as when they're caught spying). There are countries with which we have no diplomatic relations that nonetheless have UN missions and diplomats in NYC.
By the way, it's a myth that diplomatic missions are "foreign territory" where local law doesn't apply. Diplomatic immunity means only that the host country can't enter without being invited in (just like a vampire). But if you commit a murder on the grounds of the Canadian embassy in Washington, DC, you've still violated US law and can be arrested and prosecuted for it here.

Maybe it's different over here in Australia, but there was a case in the news over here a few years ago where some diplomat was driving like a maniac all the time or something like that and couldn't be prosecuted for it, I think. @AT1ST @erici right. Another thing that could happen (rarely) is that the country could choose not to assert immunity for the diplomat, leaving them subject to prosecution by the host. That occasionally happens with lower level diplomats who commit stupid crimes while abroad. But it’s very rare.
nah. That plan is far simpler and more mundane: Run the target over with your car and claim he came out of nowhere and you are so so sorry, but can't pedestrians stop looking at their phones just once, etc. As a rule, in almost all countries, you won't even lose your driver's license.
It's similar for organisations that operate under international treaties. Like for instance CERN. Those of us working there had diplomatic cards, and the sites are not directly accessible to Swiss or French police. However, it was made very clear that we would still have to pay our speeding tickets if we got one, because some people seemed to think they didn't. 😁
And let's just remember where modern diplomacy came from. Maybe an oversimplification but the 17th century and in particular the ending of the 30 Years' War. A time when the population in the area now known as Germany is estimated to have been cut in HALF by the war and the plague and starvation that followed it around. More devastating in this sense than the world wars. Utter ****ing turmoil, destruction and exhaustion. That's where you get if you don't have formalized ways of dealing nonviolently with people you don't like. It wasn't invented for ****ing fun. (Not to mention the many other wars and the rise in treaties and legalization of conflicts in that crazy century.)
The tricky thing is there is no confirmed US Ambassador to South Africa right now, just an interim chargé d'affairs who's career foreign service, which makes it trickier for SA to decide what to do. They might justifiably think it's in their interest not to expel the interim person who's almost certainly more reasonable than whoever Trump would replace them with.

The thing that gets me is that "Little" Marco Rubio knows better. He was absolutely humiliated by Trump multiple times, but still kissed the ring so that he could become Secretary of State, and you just know that he was standing in front of a mirror saying "you can do this, Marco" and then busting out his knee pads.

Mr Rasool is a Muslim. A good man. His sin? He represents the government that pointed out that Israel was committing genocide in Gaza. Worse still they took their complaint to the ICC. While I am not a strong supporter of the ANC, the ruling party of South Africa in this instance I totally support them in that decision. His expulsion is IMHO an honour for my country.

Conveniently it was picked up by Marco Rubio. Pollak has already tried to influence discussion around the relationship between the USA and SA. He has also threatened through X that the US consulate would be closed if our gov renamed a street after a Palestinian activist
