It's easy to blame the UK government for being incompetent nitwits for writing the horrendous Online Safety Act (theregister.com/2025/01/14/onl…) that strengthens monopolies with the resources to implement it and weakens small communities without those same resources.

But this is all according to plan for Meta/Facebook et al. It's regulatory capture in action. It's way cheaper to kill your competition with regulation than to buy it, especially when it's decentralized.

in reply to blaine

I hope Europe and Canada don't go down the same path as the UK here.

I also hope that "we" (as in, folks who build and care about small, independent online communities) can step up to the plate – both in terms of ensuring regulation supports _actually_ good outcomes AND in terms of building meaningful approaches to online safety.

in reply to blaine

yeah me too. Little places have a very hard time with layers upon layers of legal.

From now on, anytime someone asks me why I put so much time and effort into this arguably dumb account, I will simply tell them that I do it for Tim.

i know this is an opportunity to pile on Apartheid techbro, but am not even exaggerating when i say that, as a historian and “culture critic”, #Boomers embrace of the OG #Nazi car ―the VW Beetle― is one of those research things that keeps me up at night.

hand-waving it away as a feat of marketing doesn’t explain how one of Adolf Hitler’s prized cars, for the tech developed with it, became a symbol of white American youth radicalism, aka #hippies

@pbloem Volkswagen was a peace project designed by the allies to help for peacetime reindustrialization after the Second World War. The car design was old but the modern VW is a west German peace project. At least growing up in NY the Mercedes was viewed as the most Nazi car (Adolph's personal vehicle)
in reply to JM MD PhD

@jessetmccann @pbloem Hold up. What?? Hitler commissioned and literally had a hand in designing the original vehicle, along with Ferdinand Porsche… that well known design of German military weapons platforms. I mean for Christ’s sake, the VW logo was a Swastika. Parts for these cars and weapons were made via slave labour from concentration camps.

It was *the* Nazi car.

It wasn’t until after the war that the British took over and turned it into a reindustrialisation piece after nobody would either buy nor be gifted the production capability, because the government had to take it over.

There was no ‘design’ of a peace project. Only by accident, after the designed atrocities.

Over the weekend, I received some vaguely threatening emails from someone who wanted to stop me from publishing my research into Readium's LCP DRM.

I've published both my findings *and* the emotionally manipulative messages they sent.

I am downright delighted to announce that my latest book, YOU DESERVE A TECH UNION, has a brand new look. I really love it, and I hope you do too.

Here’s a look at what’s changed and—maybe more importantly—what’s stayed the same:

NBC/Axios: Trump's claims that Biden's pardons are invalid are nuts

There are no provisions for a president to "undo" the pardons
or a previous president. Use of an "autopen" by a president is
legally binding, as per 2005 DOJ guidance from President George W. Bush term.

Dry stone walls who doesn't love them. Today's run got me thinking about them and some I saw earlier this year. The skills and time it has taken make just amazes me. A free places here in Spain I've seen some good walls, I wonder how much difference there is between Yorkshire, Scottish and Spanish walls. Who nicked from whom erm taught others. Did the skill travel with people and adapt to the stone at the location or did they come up the "how to" because of a the need there. Boy, do I ramble ;)

And you can't talk about dry stone wall without bringing in @kristiedegaris ;)

EU foreign ministers have not yet agreed on a €40 billion aid package for Ukraine but hope to make progress soon, says EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.

Putin ally Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico said his country will not participate in any military missions in Ukraine and will not allocate "a single cent" for military aid to Kyiv.

Musk’s Tesla has been forced to halt sales of its electric Cybertruck pickup amid mounting concern about metal panels falling off the supposedly indestructible vehicles. Customers posting on the Cybertruck Owners Club website & X, said they'd been told by agents that deliveries were on hold.

EV-enthusiast website Electrek said the decision was taken amid increasing instances of trim and panels “flying off the supposedly ‘bulletproof’ electric truck.”

I like the enthusiasm and I like hearing good things about Rwanda but I don't understand how it makes sense to send blood packs one by one via drones when a (granted, slower) motorbike could schlepp 100 times more over there. It's not like the destination doesn't have a refrigerator, right?
in reply to urig

@urig Not sure how to answer the question, basically 100% of what I know about that situation is in the video, and they're not just doing it but running the operation 24 hours a day, so ... the economics must work?

I created a new #HomeAssistant helper to simplify keeping track of min/max values where I wanted to have control over when they were reset, saving creating template sensors and automations to do it for each entity.
I use it for daily garden min/max temperatures, can be used for things like tracking the peak generation on solar installations and being generic it's up to you on how you use it.
First release so use with caution.

in reply to Andrew

So quick and easy to create extra max/min sensors.
Initial Thought: The name is "Max Min" but in other HA places they use "Max/Min" with the slash.
in reply to Adrian Lansdown

@Adrian Always something you miss on a first release! I’ll add the slash in the name to make it consistent.

An outgoing official at the US Commerce Department is alleging that the Trump administration could misuse a federal broadband program to enrich Elon Musk’s Starlink business over funding faster fiber installations. pcmag.com/news/us-official-bla…

I REALLY beg people to stop treating Trump's autopen claim as if it were true. You're spreading propaganda disseminated by Heritage Foundation either willfully or stupidly misunderstanding that ALL signatures in Federal Register, including Trump's, are graphics. The underlying premise is false.

Combining this (Trump declares Biden admin pardons void) with Trump's admin ignoring judicial orders and I conclude the USA is now in an uncontrolled skid towards dictatorship.

The rule of law is void where it offends Trump.
