My semi-regular reminder of a really important reality about cities, density, services and taxes. Any questions? Graphic recently cleaned up by @kathrynmathias.bsky.social. #CityMakingMath
in reply to Brent Toderian

Like what is the benefit of low density? It's less safe, more boring, everything is far away.

Maybe you can have a bigger place because it's less expensive, but lower density is mostly a negative.

I am trying to improve my reading in #Braille by reading books I know well, currently The Fellowship of the Ring but WTBBL's version is in the older English Braille which does some funky stuff that UEB doesn't do. Plus I just don't know punctuation & formatting rules that well.

A Mother Truly Knows her Son !

Although perhaps a dubious quote,
It appears to be contexturlay correct;

Trump's mother Mary Anne Trump is said to say of her son,

"Yes, he's an idiot with zero common sense, and no social skills,
but he IS my son.

I just hope he never goes into politics. He'd be a disaster."

Trump and his MAGA need uneducated sheeps. You can control those who do not learn to question or read, human sheeps who do not have an education are a cancer and they need future young sheeps to keep controlling the US.

That's a carpenter ant. Genus Camponotus. If you give me the location I can try to determine the exact species.

Notice how the back is a rounded hump shape, and the ant is rather large. This is what makes me confident it's a carpenter.

Dug up some weeds today at the plot and left them to desiccate on a bucket for a few days (some have extensive roots). I like to display them, in part, as a lesson to other weeds that might be thinking about germinating (just don't). In a few days I'll slide them into the nearby pit of despair for eventual burial. #GrowYourOwn #garden #gardening #allotment #weeds #composting

Franky I'm too scared to taunt the weeds that I find in our roof garden. They had to get there by wind or bird, they endure the hottest heat and the coldest cold. They are like a Marine with 3543453 kills or whatever. I think if I started taunting them they might break in through the window and smother me in my sleep.

The image depicts a stylized illustration of a female character standing in a dynamic pose. She is wearing a green and brown outfit with intricate details, including a green vest over a brown tunic, and a long coat with shoulder armor. The character holds a sword aloft in her right hand, with a focused expression on her face. Her hair is dark and styled in an updo, with a small accessory visible. The background features abstract geometric shapes and a circular motif, suggesting a mystical or magical theme. The color palette is warm, with earthy tones and gold accents, enhancing the character's regal appearance. The overall style is reminiscent of fantasy art, with a blend of medieval and steampunk elements.

Just over two months into the Donald Trump regime, our own nation is, shamefully, beginning work on its own gulag archipelago spanning the clear-blue waters of the lower hemisphere...There are so many outrages around the U.S. flights of 238 Venezuelan men to El Salvador’s CECOT maximum security prison that it’s hard to pick which outrage to focus on."

in reply to Laffy

3/ "Most importantly, there is no denying the evil that is being perpetrated in our names...

In this moment, more than any other, our United States had finally become the monster that we feared in our youth, turning any remaining notion of American exceptionalism into a hideous lie, converting the fiction of Franz Kafka and George Orwell’s 1984 into our new reality."

in reply to Laffy

4/ "Yet circle of life cont's, even under dictatorship...I’d spent most of 2024 warning Trump election victory wd mean…authoritarianism, monarchy, tyranny...Life can look normal even as the air we breathe feels less free.

Since Jan20, Trump regime has been slow-cooking the crock pot of American liberty much like the proverbial frog in boiling water, turning up the heat degree by barely perceptible degree, hoping that we merely feel like we are in a hot tub, not tomorrow’s fricassee"

in reply to Laffy

5/ "Every time that a Mahmoud Khalil is grabbed off the street in the dead of night, or a Spanish soccer tattoo gets a man who thought he was escaping tyranny in his Venezuelan homeland thrown into an American-endorsed gulag instead, or the president of the United States threatens to defund an entire state because its female governor dared speak back to His Highness, the burner is turned up another millimeter or two."

Paul Cantrell reshared this.

7/ "It’s instructive to step back from this hour’s headlines and look to history, because almost every shock that we’re feeling right now is an echo of yesterday’s tyrants, from, yes, Mussolini and Hitler in the 1930s to Hungary’s Orbán and Turkey’s Erdogan right now...

But while knowing the history is so critical now, the past is also not our destiny."

in reply to Laffy

8/ "When you look across all 50 states, you can see a surprisingly large number of everyday folks — some of whom voted for Trump less than five months ago — flooding town halls to ask Republicans just what the heck they are doing here, or to beg lethargic Democrats to throw their bodies against the gears, to make it stop. They are peering over the metal edge of the pot and screaming that we’re in very hot water."
in reply to Laffy

9/ "...What matters is that so many desperate people feel a need to be in the same place, to know that they are not alone.

It’s utterly demoralizing that our supposed democratic watchdogs — the media, universities, Congress, the courts — are so craven and morally compromised. But there are still paths of less resistance where our nearly boiling water can flow. The rise of America as a consumer nation has meant the power of the pocketbook remains in our hands."

in reply to Laffy

10/ ""Populist protests outside showrooms for Musk’s Tesla have helped slash its overpriced stock by 50% since Trump’s inauguration, weakening the regime’s right arm. The retailer Target has paid a price for following the lead of Trump, and not its shoppers, on diversity. A new poll finds that 20% of Americans now support boycotts or economic pressure against businesses that support, or comply with, the Trump regime — a capitalist chokepoint that could bring the oligarchy to its knees"

Paul Cantrell reshared this.

11/ "We are at a critical point where the frog legs of this American Experiment might soon end up on the serving platter, or we can use them to hop out of their evil, steaming cauldron and gasp the rarefied air of our remaining freedom. We can look inside our hearts and shift the line again. The soaked masses can still emerge to deliver Trump and Musk our simple message: We are not cooked, not yet."

Wow: between this article, Linda McQuaig’s Rabble piece on U.S. ownership of many Canadian newspapers, and Toronto Star articles this weekend on the 51st state no longer being a joke, it seems many frogs are being boiled to uncomfortable levels. Donald Trump continues to fall in the polls, and so does his agenda. According to CNN’s Harry Enten, 2 months into his second term, Trump is already underwater in public approval. thinkbigpicture.substack.com/w…

Trump, Musk, DOGE & congressional republicans are gifting democrats the 2026 midterm election to sweep both chambers, and the democratic party leadership don't want it. They're throttling democrats to build an election campaign to decisively sweep Congress. They only want to keep power and get donor money. Tine democrats oust everyone over 65 in leadership team and committees. Time democrats get tough and fight. Some are already doing it, but they need a leadership to unite the party to fight Trump & republicans. Start with theSenate. Oust Schumer, Durbin, others. Keep the best (Murray) and jettison the rest. JMO

While I've posted most of these over the last few weeks, I've started a gallery on my site for the Muro Loco / Wall Crazy series.

Still a work in progress. I need to add more shots, caption all of them, write an intro. I'd like to find a place to exhibit them.

Edit to add that I'm still adjusting the gallery in mobile view. The captions override the images too much. Looks better on a big screen. I'm working on it.

Taking a stroll through my spam folder, I saw a bunch of legitimate messages from people and companies with their own domains, that are not publishing DMARC and SPF records. Surely everyone (and by everyone I mean Google) is rejecting their mail? How do they not realize this?

Then I noticed that one of them was received *from* gmail, so their mail probably works fine so long as they only mail gmail users. But another was via Yahoo, so that doesn't track.
jwz.org/b/ykk8

in reply to jwz

Google has private deals with Yahoo and other big mail providers like Sendgrid etc, that allow them to bypass some of the usual scanning etc. So a Gmail user using a private domain without DMARC might still be able to send mail to and from a Yahoo user without triggering round-filing.
in reply to jwz

The stats we collect for the #SpamAssassin project (mass-scan results from participating sites) have long shown that spammers are more consistent at making SPF, DKIM, and DMARC correct than are legitimate senders. DMARC in particular has no discernible benefit for most senders, so it is a useless signal.

Rejecting mail based solely on authentication failures of those deeply flawed authentication methods does more harm than good.

in reply to 🆘Bill Cole 🇺🇦

@grumpybozo Bonus round: GMail themselves effectively requires 'DMARC' (aligned DKIM and/or SPF) for any sending domain that wants to reliably reach GMail users, including through forwarding. This is really fun when domains don't do that, send email to professors in my university department, and said professors forward their email to GMail.

I'm not sure these domains set out to create unforwardable email but they sure achieved it. (We don't do SRS because that's a hack on top of SPF.)

in reply to 🆘Bill Cole 🇺🇦

@grumpybozo Wow, that's amazing. Great job everybody! So glad we spent so much time implementing all of that crap!
in reply to jwz
