Some people hit the report spam button too eagerly rather than engage. Some people engage with real spammers and accidentally amplify them rather than reporting. Unfortunately, avoiding these errors requires fixing all of the people, which is not feasible (occasionally people try and it tends to end really badly).

All by ourselves? The Great Filter and our attempts to find life.
The Universe should be full of alien civilizations. Why can’t we find any?

in reply to Ars Technica

I think there is a very good chance there are other intelligent civilizations in the Universe. My guesses for why we don't see them (some points already made by others here):
1. Space is very big and stars are very far apart
2. All evidence to date and our best theories of physics say FTL travel is impossible (yes, I know about “warp drives," and they are impossible too AFAWK).
3. The closest one may be too far away to detect.
4. Only a few survive long enough.

Yeah, I wish I had any idea of how to stop that. Not really because I value my own stuff so much, but because I really dislike "AI" and don't want to help it in any way.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has released an open source project called Rayhunter. It is designed to run on an inexpensive (~$20) mobile hotspot and look for signs of mobile spying devices called cell-site simulators. Also known as Stingrays or IMSI catchers, they masquerade as legitimate cellphone towers, tricking phones w/in a certain radius into connecting to the device rather than a tower.

Hallo liebe Menschen!

Our new-to-us Zeiss DSM 962 is not entirely broken anymore!

Resolution isn't great, but there's a whole bunch of low hanging fruit: eg. reducing the working distance by making a proper sample holder, and actually installing a vibration isolation system (currently there's no isolation between the lab floor and the column).

I'm gradually starting to regret some choices I have made in my life, particularly where I have decided to paint hazard stripes on this tank.

This article is so interesting. It was written in 1990 about how Gen X is entering the workforce and how we aren’t buying into the boomer propaganda about work.

This is why I still am still shocked to see the people I went to high school with boot licking like they do. This is why their simping for capitalism was so shocking to me in 2020. Especially after people told me for years that it “must be so nice to sit home all day!”

Then I watched them flip out when they could stay home with their family and collect an extra $600 on top of unemployment. The TANTRUMS OMG LOL

So I put up a YouTube post about the Tesla protests happening in Amsterdam this Saturday:

actionnetwork.org/events/taked…

It made a few people mad, and a handful of people unsubscribed (almost entirely Americans: I can see from the stats).

That was to be expected.

But what really surprised me was the number of people who said something like, "Why are you against Tesla when they are in favour of everything this channel stands for?"

Uh ... wut? What channel are these people watching?

in reply to Not Just Bikes 🇳🇱

Obviously if somebody has to drive a car into the city, then electric is better than gas, but at the same time, almost any other electric car (especially EU-made) is better than a Tesla!

If I said "American cars don't belong in Dutch cities" everybody would agree, but "Tesla cars don't belong in Dutch cities" is equally true.

We have lots of other electric cars to choose from in Europe these days, including microcars, which are much better for European city streets.

in reply to Not Just Bikes 🇳🇱

Teslas are also dangerous! Besides having oversized engines that encourage people to speed, they're also very heavy compared to most EU electric cars.

Tesla doesn't care about road safety either. They've released "Full Self Drive" when it was clearly unsafe, and I almost got in a serious crash myself because of FSD slamming on the brakes on a highway for no reason.

The CyberTruck is not sold in Europe because it cannot pass safety tests, especially pedestrian safety.

i have 30days (paid) vacation time plus new years and Christmas Eve. I dont even think of vacation as PTO because it is normal that vacation days are paid. The minimum by law is 20days (paid) vacation per year. I couldn't imagine living in a country where I live to work instead of working (being a necessary evil) to live.

I modelled the whole enclosure for the face mechanism, the in-game version is made of sheet metal, but this one will probably work fine for my wall mounted ornamental version of the thing.

I really need to look into FreeCAD's sheet metal workbench thing, this wouldn't probably be too hard to do out of metal after some lasering.

I also really need to learn the Assembly workbench that came with the 1.0. There's so many mechanical things I'd need to try out before printing.

#freecad

in reply to Ari [APz] Sovijärvi

The sheet metal workbench is not super hard to learn, and it's flexible. If you put radiuses for bends into your existing designs, you can "unfold" without starting over. Or you can design the whole thing using sheet metal workbench knowing the material you are going to fold.

The built-in Assembly is still a bit limited compared to Assembly3 and Assembly4, but a lot of the simplifications work really well. My initial impression was that I'd need more joint types, and then I realized that actually no I mostly don't. I haven't figured out yet how best to use it with the Fasteners workbench.

in reply to Michael K Johnson

@mcdanlj I'll definitely look into the sheet metal bench in the close future, this project I'm working on needs a metal enclosure and I could see myself making a small batch of them for other hobbyists.

What comes to the Assembly, from what I've seen on Youtube videos of the 1.0's integrated one, it'll do for the relatively simple projects I make.
