Big day here in the Brown household as our BETTY WHITE first day of issue stamp arrived!!!

in reply to George Takei πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ––πŸ½

that's her completely, I don't think she has a nice switch at all, I totally promoted Shawn Harris who ran against her in the last cycle. She's a total embarrassment.

Pine Marten

A portrait of the individual that is calling by the "red squirrel" hide, in search of the food put out for them.

Needless to say, we've been adding to the food, so this gorgeous character has a supply too.

Taken at dusk, at ISO 8000, with a Canon R5 mk2 and EF500mm f/4 lens.

in reply to Pete Walkden

that is an amazing photo!
Out of curiosity, is the low light performance of the camera just that amazing, or do you use a fancy software that deals very well with the noise (I mean, of course there was denoising applied, but I am wondering what specifically, I would not get away with ISO 8000 on my camera and darktable postprocessing)?
in reply to crypticcelery

@crypticcelery It's ok at low light photos, but limited compared with some, as it has so many MP. The cameras like the R3 and R1 are better as they have fewer MP and the pixels are themselves larger. I've been working on using Lightroom's Denoise tool to remove a lot of the noise, and then processed the result using more techniques I've learned over the years.

Looking forward to all this enhanced security

@sinister Throwing prompts at generative AI until it does the thing you want. It's explicitly not about understanding what it does or worrying the code quality.
in reply to Patrizia

@patrizia at this rate should i even learn how to program? Its been years ive not made much progress lol
in reply to sinister

@sinister Only you can answer that, but I don't expect programming jobs to go away - a lot of trouble gets caused when nobody understands or cares about the code πŸ˜€

Some open source projects are be plagued by users submitting AI-generated patches and security reports that are invalid, because the user didn't read, understand, or investigate what the AI spat out.

in reply to Patrizia

@patrizia @sinister it's been a long time since I considered myself a coder, but my feeling is that AI generated code will be acceptable for the 90% that's not edge cases. It'll have problems with the 90% of code written to deal with the edge cases.

When you see the POTUS or people who support him saying things like, "man who could have asked for a better start to this presidency," you might go "whuh?"

But if you take a look at the useful Project 2025 Tracker, they've made incredible progress on their policy goals in a remarkably short time. I encourage everyone to explore this site, because it kind of puts all the awful in one place.

People who most frequently encounter everyday, subtle discrimination have 5x the odds of having anxiety and depression. The effect holds even after adjusting for race, gender, age, and income. A #publichealth professor explains: buff.ly/vUZYlKi

The image depicts two men in a formal setting, likely an office with large windows and an American flag in the background. The man on the left, wearing a dark suit with a white shirt and a dark tie, is holding a bag of Cheetos and applying makeup to the face of the man on the right, who is seated and wearing a dark suit with a white shirt and a red tie. The seated man has his eyes closed and appears to be in a state of relaxation or discomfort. The makeup application is being done with a brush, and the seated man's face is the focus of the action. The overall scene is humorous and contrasts the formal setting with the casual act of applying makeup.

Why do LLMs make stuff up? New research peers under the hood.
Claude's faulty "known entity" neurons sometime ovverride its "don't answer" circuitry.
arstechnica.com/ai/2025/03/why…
in reply to Ars Technica

this is even a question? LLMs are linear algebra. not brains or neurons or anything else that is actually trying to simulate that.
in reply to Ars Technica

LLM always make stuff up, always. They don't reason, or make conclusions.

Trying to play a bit of #starcitizen , but the servers are kinda fucked up, so it seems unlikely.

Shame, I even reconnected my joystick, since I failed to sell it, so may as well keep using it.

in reply to Nixie

Managed to join a server, but took me minutes to get out of bed. Then took me more minutes for a tram to arrive, and instead of travel, it disappeared and I fell to my death.

I'll go do something else and join back later.

And service back then... I had a minor issue with mine (so minor I can't remember the details) so I took it to HP to be fixed and it came back like new. The tech there said I could have run it through a snowblower and brought in the pieces and they'd replace it no questions asked!
in reply to Alan Langford πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦πŸ§€πŸ§Šζ‘

@alan Good times. But no more.... Today, engineers are using AI (not maths) to derive the design parameters that would make the product fail one day after the warranty expires. That's a very exacting engineering, but not exactly good service.

When you are the beta tester, and MS screws up, then you can beta test some crap that most people would call a live linux. But whatever crap they are peddling, it will be garbage.

The Takurua Island Feast or Cultural Night in #Aitutaki is a popular native music and dance show. It is preceeded by a wonderful buffet. Have you visited any such shows in the Cook Islands? backpackandsnorkel.com/Aitutak…

in reply to George Takei πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ––πŸ½

How is it he keeps getting sued and then restarting whatever DOGE ended? Every time this happens marks yet another failure of his so-called leadership. And there's been a lot of them so far.

Turning staunch allies into enemies is a huge failure as well.
