The discourse I've heard lately is that quantum wave functions involve complex numbers so it must be "real" in a sense that the universe wouldn't exist without the idea. Though complex numbers are just a convenient abstraction for trig, and nobody ever had a clever revelation that made them decide trig was real.
Also, it's not controversial that *all* math is a model that exists exclusively within our minds. Like the color blue, it's real in a sense, but the universe doesn't require it 😛
@mcc Specifically to your question, you could put everything in terms of phase and amplitude, or compare a signal to two real valued ones and get the same results. Complex numbers just package that all up in a nice abstraction.
I think it's just that imaginary numbers weird people out, but you can solve other actual problems with those as well. They are just an abstraction!

@slembcke @mcc complex numbers are not a convenient abstraction, they are 2-dim vectors. the extra dimension isn't optional - at least not in QM. it is information that is really there.
@mcc My point is though that it’s just a value with two degrees of freedom and rules that follow trig. There are multiple ways to express that without imaginary numbers. Same with dual numbers in that they aren’t required to express differentiation, or transforms not requiring matrices. They just make for a convenient model to understand reality, but arguably the universe isn’t “made of math”.

The fact EM fields have two degrees of freedom and rules that follow trig *means something*. It points us to a useful realization (EM is a U(1) gauge field). Admittedly it "points" only to a different spot in the math labyrinth but you can still do something useful with that knowledge.
What does it mean that quantum probabilities have two degrees of freedom and follow trig rules/use a 2-norm?
