At #Retrofest2025 earlier this year there was a discussion about books. Somebody recommended The Soul Of A New Machine by Tracy Kidder. Sadly, I can't remember who that was, but I'd like to thank them as I have just finished reading it and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Ted Nelson's Computer Lib/Dream Machines. Absolute blast - I've always wanted a first edition (you can find a digital copy online), but had to settle for this Microsoft Press second edition.
Digital Deli. A collection of articles by "The Lunch Group" and guest authors, on a range of topics.
Silicon Snake Oil. Cliff Stoll's second book, which says the Internet'll never amount to anything(!)

Modern rather than contemporaneous, but Brian Dear's The Friendly Orange Glow is a great look at the rise and fall of PLATO - a system we never got this side of the pond.
Steve Roberts' Computing Across America is really more of a travelogue, but by a guy who gave up everything he owned to travel the US on a custom-built "Winnebikeo" with a portable computer.
