To summarize: Actress Sydney Sweeney just made a commercial for American Eagle. It echos an infamous 1980 commercial by then underage supermodel Brooke Shields.
Advertisers try to speak to the id. I'm not surprised American Eagle wants to try to recapture themes of that older commercial. But, they didn't just copy, they have leaned into new themes.
Sydney Sweeney, like Brooke Shields talks about her "good jeans" but also, in case the whistle wasn't loud enough her blue eyes and how they are passed on from parent to child.
This ad will be regarded as very successful and we may see more of it. Isn't that depressing?

I guess don't buy American Eagle if you can avoid it. But, really you shouldn't buy American Eagle because they sell the same poorly constructed clothing found at many chains.
If you want to look good in jeans I recommend made to measure. A perfect fit will make you look amazing and almost no one has clothing that fits unless they can sew. If you can't sew, consider having a thrift piece altered by a tailor. This can be done for less than retail sometimes. That's how you get "good jeans"
A substantial portion of the money a company like American Eagle spends on developing a product goes into marketing and image. Trying to produce ads that will catch a headline, trigger deep nostalgia, ads that make people feel things.
That's why although the Brooke Shields controversy in 1980 was seen as negative in the general press in the advertising trade papers it was a highly admired campaign and lead to the thinking that having people fret about your underaged models was "effective"
I love reading advertising trade papers. They are so earnestly engaged in finding ways to manipulate our emotions to sell product and I think once you see that the glamor is broken.
It doesn't feel good to be manipulated. I was definitely manipulated by this kind of advertising as a teen, and still can be swayed even now. But, understanding how it functions makes it easier to see how it could be happening.

Mostly I take clothing to the laundry around the corner and the tailor there alters whatever I bring in. Makes me feel like a genius about fashion he's amazing.
I go through jeans too fast to get them altered. I buy them at the charity shop and wear them (on rotation) until they're actually indecent (by which time they'll be used only for gardening and wood-splitting).

This is the same thing as all the Garland bashing with respect to the very complex cases against Trump. The naysayers wanted immediate action though the justice system doesn't work that way. What's provable in the court of public opinion isn't necessarily provable in court, and you need airtight cases to win in court. Also, the courts aren't going to fix the political problems we face. People tend to forget that.
Yes it's frustrating, but this is not something that will be fixed quickly. It requires us all to do our part. That includes our congress critters - and they are, and so must we.

So...Epstein has this island. All the rich and famous are going there. Trump is invited to join the cream of American society.
Which he turns down, for...no reason given. I mean, he was invited, so it was before their "Great Failing Out". And they were good friends. And, despite knowing that Epstein liked "the younger side" of women, and always had many hot women around him...DONALD TRUMP, with everything we know about his venal misogyny, and his tacky pursuit of admission to the upper reaches of the upper class, REFUSED AN INVITATION to an island full of hot women on the younger side, from the man he acknowledges was his friend, which would have given Trump access to the richest of the rich. The top of US society.
So given all the inducements we can plainly see that were laid before him, this gourmand of sex, this vulgar social climber, who claims he had no idea that Epstein was doing anything illegal...refused the invite...for what reason?
Seriously, what possible reason did he have for not going? Epstein was his friend, the island full of rich people and hot young women. This is like St. Peter throwing open the gates of heaven and saying "Come on in!" and we're supposed to believe that the venal, self-interested Donald Trump somehow virtuously turned it all down, for absolutely no reason?

If you want to look good in jeans I recommend made to measure. A perfect fit will make you look amazing and almost no one has clothing that fits unless they can sew. If you can't sew, consider having a thrift piece altered by a tailor. This can be done for less than retail sometimes. That's how you get "good jeans"

in reply to myrmepropagandist • • •A substantial portion of the money a company like American Eagle spends on developing a product goes into marketing and image. Trying to produce ads that will catch a headline, trigger deep nostalgia, ads that make people feel things.
That's why although the Brooke Shields controversy in 1980 was seen as negative in the general press in the advertising trade papers it was a highly admired campaign and lead to the thinking that having people fret about your underaged models was "effective"

in reply to myrmepropagandist • • •I love reading advertising trade papers. They are so earnestly engaged in finding ways to manipulate our emotions to sell product and I think once you see that the glamor is broken.
It doesn't feel good to be manipulated. I was definitely manipulated by this kind of advertising as a teen, and still can be swayed even now. But, understanding how it functions makes it easier to see how it could be happening.

They used to publish articles straightforwardly talking about how to design free-to-play games specifically to trigger compulsive spending in the "whales".

I submit all of that is intentional, which is why I mention it.

summisera is an online option with prices so low I find it concerning. (It's about $110 for jeans which is both expensive and cheap at the same time since they do make them to measure each time)
They are the only big international company I know of doing it.
Mostly I take clothing to the laundry around the corner and the tailor there alters whatever I bring in. Makes me feel like a genius about fashion he's amazing.

in reply to myrmepropagandist • • •I go through jeans too fast to get them altered. I buy them at the charity shop and wear them (on rotation) until they're actually indecent (by which time they'll be used only for gardening and wood-splitting).
Call me tragically old — I'll wear that — but I do find that stretch jeans look better and are more comfortable than others. (For context, I'm approaching retirement, but I take jeans in a 32" waist and my lower body's still presentable.) I don't know why everyone doesn't prefer them.

I buy white ones and tiedye them. Usually from the thrift shop, but l bought some of these when they were on sale. They fit me perfectly and have lots of pockets.

Especially given that Sweeney has become the darling of the right, and while she hasn't fully *embraced* that, she has also chosen not to reject it. She's apparently comfortable with (or at least accepting of) becoming a symbol for them & their racial & gender politics.
It would be impossible to *prove* intent here (certainly not without some kind of behind-the-scenes bombshell), but it is super sketchy & there is no way they don't know what it sounds like.

Jeans back then did not have lycra and could be incredibly confining. They could be so tight some women used plyers to zip them up at the first wear after a wash. "Survival of the fittest" was the selling point. She touches her foot to her head. The jeans fit and are thus superior, with no direct inference to Brook.
(Can we recognize just how Brook pulls off that technical dialog while getting dressed and basically doing yoga? That isn't easy)
The tag line in the modern ad conflates the model's genes with jeans.
That her genes are superior, as well as her jeans.
