It is all timing, instinct, and muscle memory; I also toast and butter an English muffin and administer treats to three cats as I wait for water to boil. Most mornings, I don't even remember making coffee.
I had the process completely dialed in, but this summer I moved. The new kitchen is very right-handed—unlike my old kitchen and myself—and the new stove heats water slightly faster, and everything is completely out of phase. It is only a matter of time before I wake up on the kitchen floor covered in hot coffee grounds.
