feel like this explanation is a bit too flat. it's not as simple. it's the fact that 1.) Repairing the roof in the summer would cost more than removing the standing water when it rains 2.) The people actually working under the hole in the roof do not have a choice on whether it gets repaired. It's the people who work in houses with well-maintained roofs that decide when it makes sense to replace the roof 3.) The time spent working around the hole in the roof costs more money than the time spent fixing it. This is because during the sunny days the people working without a roof get sunburn. The problem is that because that's not actually realized or tangible, the people making decisions with a roof over their head just see the cost to repair vs the cost to remove water.

This is from my own personal experience with tech debt. Literally told that I can't have automation like things to image devices because I do it so rarely that it doesn't make sense to buy it. This neglects the fact that when I do have to image them, I'm spending WEEKS manually imaging hundreds of computers. Not only does this cost people in terms of not being able to get tech support but it also impacts my morale as I sit there doing a tedious task for infinity. Same goes with software too. Okay, it might take money to speed up software but when your employees are wasting countless hours with support calls for something or having to spend 30 minutes doing a workaround, taking them off task and hampering focus...

like idk how to explain people this but when you are told "Oh, that's a minor sunburn" over and over again it starts to add up and you start resenting the power structure to the point you just don't even bother trying. Especially when you know that fixing the roof would let you be more productive at your job, which would far offset any initial cost to fix it in the first place. This is why I am so burned out it's not simply just being mistreated it's the fact that like. you can't even exploit my labor hard enough. i am a very passionate person. you give me interesting things to look at and I'll get back to you. give me "spend 5 minutes each time i want to get across the house walking around the giant gaping hole in the roof to avoid sunburn also the large amounts of sunscreen i now have to wear" and it's like. insult to injury.

It got to the point that I was recommending instead of replacing the roof we just got an outdoor umbrella and put it under the hole. This was seen as too much and I was expected to just. live with the hole in the roof.
