Tsunami Watch issued for West Coast Vancouver Island and whole BC Coast

Check tsunami.gov for regular updates. It will be a few hours before we know if a Warning is needed.

This is from the 8M Russia earthquake. A tsunami has been generated. We will wait for the next hours to see what kind of impact we can expect if any.

New update for 7:25 PM. It includes potential times for impact from the earthquake on West Coast locations. 10 PM or 11 PM. Right now they just list Langara light station and Tofino.

Still only an advisory at this time, but it could be upgraded to a warning if the impact is expected to be large enough to warrant .

There should be another update in about half an hour to an hour from now

Even though the Advisory is "only" predicting 30cm (1ft), this still implies that serious and dangerous ocean currents will occur so you SHOULD NOT go anywhere near the waters edge.

DO NOT GO TO THE WATERS EDGE. STAY AWAY.

Port Alberni residents:

If a Warning is issued and the Tsunami Siren activates you must leave the inundation zone. The zone is the brown area in the map below. Try not to cross a bridge except Redford Extension.

People outside the zone do not evacuate.

Good gathering places:

3rd and Argyle
Echo Centre
Walmart/CanTire (up Johnston or from McLean Mill)
Tseshaht Market

On the off chance a Warning is issued and the Tsunami Siren sounds, you will be able to hear it in all its glory on my backyard pond cam.

The nearest siren speaker is at Redford St and 4th Ave, just 1.5 blocks from Alberniweather HQ. I am just above the inundation zone.

It’s quite something to hear! (we last heard it after the Alaska quake in the very early morning of January 23, 2018)

If predictions are correct, the first waves (max 30cm) should be arriving at Langara point on the extreme northwest tip of the west coast of Canada/Haida Gwaii in 5 minutes (10:05PM PDT)

in reply to Alberniweather ☔️ ☀️ ❄️ 🌬️

Looks like ever so slight variance/waves coming into Langara Island on Haida Gwaii as measured at the Henslung Cove station on Langara Island. Maybe a few centimetres. You can see it best by looking at the gap between the red and black (observation and prediction) lines, or the blue line on the bottom.

Maybe 10-15cm? We'll wait for the official word from the TWC on what they measured.

Port Alberni residents: You can safely see the data from the Port Alberni tide station here:

Mobile: tides.gc.ca/en/water-level-app… (click the blue bar and search for Port Alberni)

Or Web: tides.gc.ca/en/stations

The red line is the observed height, the black predicted. We are also at low tide.

To emphasize that this is a long-duration event, nearly an hour after the predicted time waves would appear at Langara on Haida Gwaii, we are now seeing much more obvious waves on the station there. This is still only about 5cm.

This could mean we might see tiny variations in Tofino and Port Alberni to start in the next 15-30min, but could see much larger variations and currents in the midnight to 12:30 timeframe.

Now there's a proper (small) tsunami wave signal!
From the Henslung Cove tide station on Langara Island, Haida Gwaii BC (NW tip of BC coast). In about 10 minutes the tide gauge rose to:
1737mm
and fell to
1569mm

That is a wave of 168mm or 16.8cm or 6.6 inches.

As predicted, less than 1ft/30cm.

Watching the currents in the Somass River at the head of the Alberni Inlet. I'm safely perched on a platform about 5 metres above the water.

The lights of the city and paper mill shining onto the water allow me to see how it is flowing. Have not noticed anything abnormal.

Also keeping an eye on data from tide gauges in Tofino, Bamfield (at the other end of the Inlet) and here. Nothing significant has registered.

nothing noticeable on the gauge at Port Alberni are here on the river.

I see it took about 10 minutes for a wave to go from Tofino south to Banfield.

My phone died... of course. so it is on the charger in the car and I am on my laptop tethered. The tide gauge is bumping along the bottom lol or something... I'm going to wait for the next wave before I go home.

Winter Harbour on the North Island, also up an Inlet, measured a 27cm wave on the 1:20AM update from NWC. I expect we will be close to that.

here is a video from the height of the first wave here in Port Alberni. At about 1:10 AM PDT

The buoy is swaying back-and-forth in the beam of light reflecting in the river. What you can't see is the ripples of the water in the stuff flowing up.

At the tide station about 5km down the inlet (toward the sea) from where I am, the difference between the peak of the wave around 1:10AM and the low at 1:47AM is 39cm.

The water is returning now. Here's a picture of that buoy. Interesting little ripples. There is no wind so it's all just river and tide current.

The gauge is showing the water coming back up toward normal level. We should be at full flood for the tide right now. We'll see if we go back above the predicted tide.

water is noticeably higher than last time. That's thanks to The natural tide coming up as well as the tsunami. Amazing. A second wave. I think might be larger than the first one.

Back in the car charging the phone back up.

The difference between the low of the first tsunami wave and the high of the second tsunami wave was over 1 metre due to the addition of the rising tide!

1.056m or 3ft! This combines with the rising tide. It will be very interesting to see what the official wave measurement is.

2:19AM TWC update (#11) had the first wave at 1.2ft

The water at the tide gauge is coming back in for a third wave.

I have a slightly different view, stay tuned!

We are also close to natural high tide. I am worried we might start to see fishermen putting in the water.

all right, I am calling it a night. Or morning I guess lol.

The third wave has come in and looks quite a bit smaller than the other two. Definitely not nearly as long period of flood, but that might also be because the natural tide is at Slack and high tide

Here are a couple more comparisons. This time from low of the second wave to high of the third.

good night all 😀

The tide gauge at Port Alberni is still showing the tsunami is active in the harbour and river. Look at the difference between the shape of the curve around the last cycle of low and high tide compared to this cycle this morning and overnight.

I am sure there are still strong currents. Really hoping that nobody is in the river. It's hot today and people will want to swim. It could still be dangerous.

This is a recent, interesting anecdote:

"This Message is from Washington State Ferries.

A tsunami advisory is in place for the region. We do not expect any impacts to ferry service. All sailings are operating as scheduled. We are monitoring the situation and will share updates if conditions change.

This alert was sent on 07/30/2025 at 9:46AM.

View All Travel Alerts"

Of course the Washington State Ferries run on the salt water/tidal Puget Sound, and every ferry dock has a boarding ramp that's raised and lower throughout the day to accommodate rising and falling tides as the car deck rises and falls with the floating ferry

A quarter- to half-meter ripple during one boat loading could probably be accommodated by the hinged nature of the loading ramps, but still...

@chris the angle of the earthquake/fault suggest a wave would have been propelled towards south-east. (and northwest). This would explain larger wave at Hawaii than what the Bee Sea will or has gotten.

The Oregon/Cal. Border, and for Hawaii.

Google doesn't show Tsinami warnings on west coast, but it does in Hawaii which shows Hawaii Civil defense is well organised to feed that data to them. (Civil Defense is always busy with volcanoes, hurricanes and tsunamis). (pic taken from map of Hilo).
in reply to Jean-Francois Mezei

@chris In the TV coverage, they showed flooding at the SCP Hilo Hotel. here it is on the map and shows how water being pushed into the bay would be funneled and rise more that out at sea.

in Pic 2, I have highlighted the water level seen on the TV gootage of that part of the hotel. Note normal water level on the left in the boat channel.

in reply to Jean-Francois Mezei

@chris A while back I showed height of waves in Hawaii. The Kahului got a new wave so was updated from 1.2m to 1.75m . This shows that the first wave is not th only one and subsequent ones are larger, as many had warned.
in reply to Jean-Francois Mezei

Two measurements: crest to trough, and amplitude (normal to crest).

To drop from Warning to Advisory, all amplitudes need to drop below 1m, or crest to trough below 2m (6feet).

Highest crest to trough: (divide by 2 for amplitude).
Hanalei 2.4m (8ft)
Haleiwa: 2.4m (8ft)
Hilo 2.76m (9ft)
Kahului: 3.3m (11ft)

They beleive that amplitude is now on downward trend and within an hour , may be able to downgrade from warning to advisory, but advisory may stay one for a while longer due to past experiences with delayed wave arrivals.

Of all those readings by the US Tsunami Centre, KAHULUI MAUI is the winner with 1.75m amplitude (so 3.5m from trough to crest).

Remains to be seen how big the tsunami was on the westward waves to hit Soviet Union. (and how much damage was caused there by the actual earthquake).

Unknown parent

I am really hoping that Johanna Wagstaffe (CBC meteorologist) will do an insight piece pulling apart the elements of a tsunami, what happens, when, and why.

It is so important to explain how the unseen is what can kill. Everyone thinks only a big wave makes for destruction. Those currents are really frightening. I fear for those who don’t know to fear them.

Unknown parent

@theteapixie it was amazing! I wish it had been daylight, but at the same time, I am glad there was absolutely no one else around. There could have definitely been serious issues if anyone was in the water or in a boat.
