SCOOP: Substack sent a push alert promoting a Nazi blog. The alert contained a swastika and prompted users to subscribe to newsletter featuring opinions and news important to the "white nationalist community." Another Nazi blog is being promoted in Substack's "Rising in History" list usermag.co/p/substack-sent-a-p…

πŸ‘€ β€˜just hold your nose and use substack’ they say.

FUCK THAT, the standard you walk past. Burn it to the ground.

in reply to Taylor Lorenz

I’m truly shocked at this, but judging by the state of today’s world it doesn’t surprise me.
It’s absolutely horrendous.
in reply to Taylor Lorenz

interesting... i used to have a major "nazis all up in my comments" issue but it seems to have gone away, even though i just did a post about epstein / crypto / israel which i figured would be absolutely irresistible to them.
in reply to Taylor Lorenz

yeah, this is what I meant by "Substack’s editorial stances are…not ideal."

our phones are created and maintained through the slavery of children in the democratic republic of congo, all of our software is designed by white supremacists so comfortable in their ideology that they don't even bother to hide it and they're still defended to the ends of the earth. the tech space is founded on and thrives because of white supremacy.

this is why free speech can't be centralized or hosted on platforms with algos. the service will eventually have to decide some stuff goes too far for their other users, and eventually push stuff on people who don't want it.

an open network where you mostly only see what's boosted by who you follow with good moderation for unwanted mentions, is the way to let everybody share a space. like the web and email.

Free speech means free speech, even for the abhorrent; censorship is the true danger.
in reply to Taylor Lorenz

Yet more proof why centralized platforms are fundamentally incompatible with free speech, especially those with algorithms, and *especially* if said algorithms are designed to rake in cash

Guess I'll be adding substack to my router's blacklist

How social media is contributing to the destruction of society. They are never held to account.

…there is an abundance of Fediverse compatible Substack alternatives that I suggest looking into. it doesn’t matter if Substack is β€œeasier” or β€œbetter at monetization” or whatever, that’s no excuse to be using a platform promoting shit like this.
in reply to Furbland's Very Cool Mastodonβ„’

@GroupNebula563 I think that's a fair point.

Time to move, I think Taylor. I can recommend Ghost as an alternative. It may work out better value too.

in reply to Gavin

@gavin57 another plus of Ghost is that it’s federated, so you can follow a Ghost blog from fedi! 404 Media does it: @feed

@GroupNebula563 @feed I think it'll also help you move your email subs across too.

I'd use it myself if people actually read what I wrote. 🀣

number of people still using ex-Twitter clearly shows a vast majority worldwide have no issues hanging out at a Nazi bar apathetic to what's at its core, substack is doing the same knowing most don't care a bit.
in reply to Taylor Lorenz

Please edit your post to upload a random picture, so the link preview doesn't show. This really shouldn't be showing up in any timeline like this.
in reply to Taylor Lorenz

Sarcasm incoming:

I mean, they're not wrong when they say "rising in history".

But yes, however substack is structured, they are evil due to promoting that shit.

in reply to Taylor Lorenz

Any platform that doesn’t cut out nazi content is a nazi platform.

There is no defence for this. We all know how Popper’s Paradox of Tolerance works.

Kim Possible reshared this.

in reply to Taylor Lorenz

A valid concern undermined by being written about on Substack. Everyone needs to be off that site since December 2023. That's how long they've been openly OK with white supremacists and Neo Nazis. I found out about it last year, but the news is well and truly out by now.
in reply to Taylor Lorenz

I am pretty sure Substack is NOT a Nazi bar. No way. That is totally not true.
in reply to Taylor Lorenz

The only reason I have a substack account was to subscribe to a story posted in parts by Karl Schroeder and I found substack so incomprehensibly hard to navigate I dropped my subscription only a few chapters in.

How are terrible platforms like substack and discord successful?

in reply to Taylor Lorenz

hey but you know, at least people in the UK can't have a wank without showing their passport. I'm so glad we're protected from all the bad stuff on the internet now.
in reply to Taylor Lorenz

and anyone else who might be interested, check out how can you leave substack: leavesubstack.com/

Writing from Ghost. Not that I have many subscribers, but I deleted my Substack.
