just like in any big city, like Manhattan for instance, it's not possible. You just have to move everyone up a few floors in all buildings. I hope the hotels facilitate this.

@kimlockhartga I went through a tsunami warning in Honolulu back in the 90s. Yes they evacuate Waikiki. They bring in police and long lines of city buses and they move people out en masse. A few people hole up in the upper floors of hotels and condos. It's pretty crazy and imperfect but it's been done before.

@eugeneparnell @kimlockhartga this time they strongly promoted "vertical evacuation", especially in the tourist hotels. Just move everyone above the fourth floor. Hawaii doesn't have sufficient transportation infrastructure to get everyone out of the red and yellow zones otherwise. It was immediate gridlock.

The Weather Channel says “The National Tsunami Warning Center, based in Alaska, issued a tsunami warning for western parts of the Alaska Aleutian Islands and Hawaii, and an advisory for portions of the West Coast, including California, Oregon, and Washington.”

I have family in the south of Tokyo. All been moved to high ground. Town evacuated but no sign of it yet.
