Picture it--1940s and a guy at the bar is arguing with the barkeep to not bounce him.
It's late and he's scared of going home to his wife. Also planning on what he's going to tell her.

In walked a blonde and, dear, she asked me to dance
I told that blonde that there wasn't a chance
I love my kids and my beautiful wife
That's the honest truth, dear, and I swear by my life!

There's things I am sweetheart, and things that I ain't
'cause I'm a man and a man is no saint
Won't you forgive 'cause I'm tellin' you true
I was in the tavern only thinkin' of you
Just singin':

Sparrow in the treetop, sparrow in the treetop
Though he loves his mate
Sparrow in the treetop, sparrow in the treetop
Scared of goin' home because it's too darn late!
