A 38 min commute takes me 2.2 miles of that 1.8 miles is by subway and takes only 6.5 of the 38min.

The rest is the trial of getting on and off of the train. I think this must be some kind of maximum level of transfer logistics to distance traveled ratio. Big sigma on the deltas.

How dispersed are your morning deltas?

My trip downtown is about 17km. Takes an hour to an hour and 20ish. Most of that is the bus and waiting for said bus (also the source of most of the variability).

No dedicated lanes = buses at whim of traffic.

Once I get to the subway it's relatively quick and predictable, at least in the morning before the endless delays begin later in the day.

I visited several Asian cities last fall: like night and day in comparison. Comprehensive, speedy, reliable subway service.

if I do commute to the office (rarely, other reasons), that is about 7.5km. About 20-25min by bike + Subway, or 25-30min by bike alone (note: larger european city with somewhat serviceable bike infrastructure).
If there is a fun event and I stay till late in the evening, the subway route can disperse further, since the subway line reverts to 10 minute intervals (5 minutes at least during rush hour). Worst cases have been + 10 minutes.

I do spend about 15 minutes walking / waiting (transfer from one subway to another, then tramway) for my 5 mile / 40-minute commute. Well it’s closer to 50 minutes now with construction going on…It’s not too bad compared to your delta! But I get annoyed by the transfers and prefer to bike when possible so that brings me down to 35-40 minutes

average walking speed as about 3mph. If you don't take the subway how long does to take?

~10 min to get from inside my room to the entrance of my apartment building

~5? min walk from home to station

~12? minutes train ride

2-20 min wait for a bus that takes maybe ~5 minutes to get from the station to the office - or i can walk that in ~20 minutes and show up sweaty and gross

another ~3 min between entrance of my office building to my actual office

versus driving:

~10 min to get from inside my room to my car

10-20 min depending on traffic to drive to the office and park

~7 min to get from my car to my office

I have a long, but fairly smooth commute. About 35-40 minutes by car, then another 45 minutes by train. No changing of trains, step on, ride to destination, step off. I only do that max twice a week. There have been the odd issues with the trains in my city, but largely they're reliable.
