My Signal app (@signalapp) in Android just requested permission to install third party apps in order to perform an update to 7.66.5. This is the first time it happens. Until now I updated it via F-Droid. Is this an expected behavior?

That sounds like the standard standalone update procedure Signal provides for non-Playstore phones. Apparently your f-droid source pulls that Signal APK from *somewhere* and is apparently slow enough in updating that the Signal autoupdater triggered. At least that's how it sounds like.

(and the internal update mechanism does need installation permissions to do exactly that, the fact that you are irritated by the request is why it is not usually recommended.)

I think signal in F-droid is available only via the Guardian Project Repository, and yes it's a little bit slow

@Basyl @Signal @Fou @cherti If it's not on F-Droid store it is not safe mind you.
APK's from external sites are not F-Droid 1 and 2 is unsafe simply.

@zer0unplanned
I hear you. It's F-Droid after all... I had installed the 'Guardian Project' repo, which serves Signal via F-Droid
