I bet most Americans have no idea what the Department of Education really does. They’re about to find out the hard way.

Something I'd like to see in writing a lot more often:
"More than 1,600 American children have died of Covid - nearly 80% of them after in-person learning resumed in 2021 - but we talk about their experience of Covid now primarily in terms of school closings and learning loss."

- David Wallace-Wells

I saw #InTheLostLands last night. The plot is a bit thin, stretched from a GRRRRR Martin short story. I liked it visually and I thought the two leads did well with the material. The sound has the compression problem too typical of movies with wide dynamic range. Overall I enjoyed it much more than reviews would lead you to expect.

I'm really getting sick of having to keep turning off Apple Intelligence every time one of my devices updates, which they do fairly frequently. Apple needs to respect their customers' choices and stop this crap now.

thank you for the phenomenal reporting on this! My jaw is on the floor after seeing Signal and ProtonMail on the list. But also: GIPHY and VSCO - what?

Notably absent are Fediverse platforms. And honestly this is the biggest motivation for going one step further and self-hosting (it feels like an additional protective shield)

Fuck it man, idk. Just put on some Grateful Dead. Put on some Aretha. Print some kind of zine. Paint a sign. Start a band. Write a manifesto. Bootleg a t-shirt. Hand out stickers. Throw a party. Keep it weird.

Every day I find a brand-new little horror that's been happening in US agriculture. After a lifetime of collecting ag horrors. ok throw it on the video essay pile with the other 200 that are waiting I guess

Anyway here's today's fresh horror! I think you will like it!

Anyway, I'm thinking a lot about how foodies spent the last 30 years lecturing poor people on "making wise choices with their food dollars."

They should have been counseling landowners on making wise choices with their property.

in reply to Sarah Taber

A food card I get from my health insurance gives a monthly allowance for food, but only "healthy food". Puts me in a state of concern on if my choices as being healthy are actually healthy and thus paid for.

Look at that face. I would give that face anything. Photo from my collection, ca. 1940s.

#Politics It just occurred to me that Trump is utilizing the same tactics as Marxists have used to recruit people to their cause. You start the cry of "they're ripping us off, they're getting wealthy at our expense, down with the pigs, etc. Then once you have them all worked up to a frenzy, they'll follow you anywhere, and you can control them like sheep. This a brand new opinion on my part, so maybe I have it a little wrong, heck, maybe I have it all wrong.
in reply to Bruce Toews

That’s actually pretty spot on. #FDR called it government by organized mob, though to be fair he was describing something a little different. But it is absolutely the mob mentality. If you’ve ever found yourself on the wrong side of an online mob, as I unfortunately have, you have a bit of a taste. The mob can do no wrong, even when they’re wrong.

Elderly lady blew me a kiss!

I was out on my lunch. As I returned to my parked car, I noticed a large SUV struggling to reverse out of their parking spot.

I walked in front of the SUV and calmly waved and talked the tiny lady through backing out and turning the wheel and exiting.

Before she drove off, she smiled and blew me a kiss 😀

That could be someone's grandma or mom.

I hope they tell the story about the handsome brown man with beard who helped her - emphasis on handsome of course!

Three Hollywood movies were released in 1995 with internet themes: the Keanu Reeves cyberpunk film Johnny Mnemonic (with an accompanying website), The Net with Sandra Bullock, and Hackers. As well as these 3 films, I look back at William Gibson's now extinct mid-90s website, "William Gibson’s Yardshow", and the equally lost to time Johnny Mnemonic net.hunt, an online scavenger hunt. cybercultural.com/p/cyberspace… #InternetHistory #90smovies

#EU retaliates against #Trump’s #tariffs as #TradeWar escalates

The #EuropeanUnion hit back Wed at Trump’s #steel & #aluminum tariffs w/its own levies, announcing tariffs on billions of dollars’ worth of products, including bourbon & motorcycles, while warning of further retaliation.

The 27-nation bloc said its 2-stage response would target ~$28B in US exports. The announcement of the European measures came at the same time Trump’s tariffs took effect.

Rahm Emanuel Is Back To Punch Some Hippies: A Report

Tiger Beat on the Potomac (thanks Charlie!) morning email thingie has shaken me to the core of my being: "FIRST IN PLAYBOOK: “Rahm Wants to Run. Yes, For the Presidency” — a marmalade-dropper from JMart to start your day. First they came for the welfare state, and the Democrats "reached across the aisle."

Then they came for the Supreme Court, and the Democrats voted for Clarence Thomas, et al.

Then they came for the election finance law, and the Democrats said, "We really should do something about that."

Then they came for voting rights, and the Democrats promised to defend them.

Then they started to dismantle the national government, and the Democrats composed strongly worded letters.

I've been lucky enough to be born and surrounded by the necessary conditions to recently scale from the 64.5% vulnerable/poor class to the 32.4% middle class of my country. I'm just a blink away from poverty.
I have the privilege of having spare time to think about the injustice we endure as a society.
I'm looking for a community to learn/help more.
I want to focus my energy and time on solutions. I would love to support any Open Source projects that need Spanish Translation.✊🏽

We can have one of two things — but not both.

We can either have a society that tolerates (celebrates?) millionaires and billionaires polluting the planet and destroying the biosphere...

Or we can have a planet with a healthy biosphere but with fewer millionaires and NO billionaires at all.

Your choice.

I made that decision 45 years ago. Unlike me, society, particularly American society, chose millionaires, billionaires, and destruction. Lose, lose, lose. Yay me. Yay comrades and fellow travelers. I will continue anti-billionaire-and-destruction 'til I die. Maybe some billionaires will be taken out before I go. I do not expect the destruction to end.

Even without the problem of climate change, the extreme concentration of wealth is unsustainable for many other reasons. And on top of that, it sucks.
