In a blatantly unconstitutional move, Trump has detained and threatened to deport a green card holder who is legally in the U.S. for protesting and holding views he finds abhorrent. Tomorrow, The Big Picture explores this latest attack on free speech. As boring as this topic may be and resentful as we may be that this man continues dominating news cycles, it's impossible to avoid either, because the damage is ongoing.

Heather Cox Richardson writes,

"The stock market continued to fall today. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell another 478 points, or 1.14%; the S&P 500 fell almost 0.8%; & the Nasdaq Composite fell almost 0.2%."

It's also important to note what this means for our "democracy" (again, Trump et al aside). Markets work by making things that people spend money on. We "vote with our dollar." If a few people have all the votes, then we'll have lots of lobbyists, corporate lawyers, fancy cars, etc., but constant shortages for things regular people need (childcare, social work, etc.) Markets are antidemocratic, and more so the more inequality there is.
in reply to The Luddite

I'd throw something else into the mix. Fiscal policy is what's tended to help the folks who can't vote with their dollars. Yet fiscal policy is exactly what (a bunch of) the people who can vote with their dollars suppresses. They tend to want lower taxes, less regulation, and less government spending, and they tend to get their way. So, not only is the market arrangement unequal by nature, it has a built-in dynamic that tends to make it become more unequal through time. We tend to get economic recessions when this dynamic reaches such an extreme that the market mechanism itself starts breaking down. Then fiscal policy is kicked back on and the cycle resets. While I don't agree with the details of the analysis in this talk you can see this process depicted visually in a quite vivid way here. Every time we approach and bounce off that wall on the right represents a lot of pain for the folks who are not in that 10%.

Dear conference organisers,

Please stop hosting your events in Texas (yes, even Austin).

It's become far too dangerous for a lot of people to attend the event, and many of the rest of us will avoid it to support our besieged LGBTQA+ colleagues.

I'd not even seen the sled in the forest before, a visitor pointed it out. Slightly overgrown!

After using that (unsuccessfully) on the concrete beams, I used the rest of the twilight to pull these rollers out of the forest, too. Seemed like a good idea to do this before the meadow starts sprouting again.

They have holes for filling with water ballast. Heck knows where the plugs for them are though. Probably disintegrated.

I am back from Austin and it's my birthday today! If you wish to support my work I have a ko-fi thingy I'll link to here (I've been *mostly* living off savings 💸 for the past ∼2.5 years; I'm grateful to be back in a full-time role from this month, working on something I care deeply about). Otherwise, do me a birthday favour and do what I strive to: listen, have empathy, & be good to others in this world. I appreciate the friends I've made in communities online 💗 ko-fi.com/andypiper

@economics-that-works

“ It’s simply assumed, by most sides of the political spectrum, that the growth of ‘real’ GDP is what constitutes economic progress.

We think this is a mistake. When socialists and the Left use ‘real’ GDP as a measure of progress, or even as a quantity of empirical analysis, they are implicitly buying into the very capitalist paradigm that they otherwise reject. Let us explain.”

Evergreen and worth the read.

“ According to some of the dominant interpretations of neoclassical theory, the price of a commodity reveals the utility (i.e. pleasure) that a consumer derives from it. ”

So on the price goes up, a product’s utility goes up *by definition*.

But with inflation, all prices are going up, suggesting that everything is always becoming better. @pluralistic

I'm as amused as anyone by the stories of Tesla (especially Cybertruck) harassment and vandalism. But I think it's important to remember that a lot of people bought them for environmental reasons, and just destroying these cars would be an environmental mistake. The enemy here isn't EVs, it's the man Elon, his friends, and what he stands for. Go after NEW sales to hurt his income. Give current drivers SOME benefit of the doubt.

Well this is looking somewhat promising. I think I can put the kinematic mount in a housing and center the probe tip in the lathe, then bore a hole in the housing that's colinear so the result is accurate.

it will be interesting to learn about the repeatability you can get via the 3d printing method.
