Via Kyle Griffin:

Democrats won a #Minnesota state House special election Tuesday night — restoring a tie in the chamber and ending a monthslong power struggle in the Legislature.

the company has openly stated that that's the goal, it's just they've said it in language that business majors understand and most programmers do not

we need to fucking learn. before it's too late.

(that was also the pitch behind Java, that's why all the business types got so excited about it, but Java didn't really fulfill that promise in the way Go does)

This week, the Trump administration cancelled all grant programs under the Violence Against Women Act. These grants fund most court protective order programs.

At the same time, Trump declares you are a domestic terrorist if you deface a Tesla.

Literally, a swasticar has more legal protection than a woman now.

What's with mastodon search? For example, I can't search for hashtags to find people with similar interests. Frustrating

@FediTips do you have a thought on this? Anyone else know if I'm missing something?

in reply to ts 🚉

Finding people works a bit differently on here as there deliberately isn't a central search engine (because someone nasty might take it over).

I've tried to do a guide for all the methods for discovering people to follow on here:

fedi.tips/how-do-i-find-accoun…

If your server's search isn't giving you interesting results, you might want to try methods such as Fediverse directories or Fediverse groups as these methods are both server-neutral.

Maybe something like this, maintained by @FediTips?

@mastodonmigration might also have suggestions for the sort of fediverse elevator pitch you're looking for.

"Entirely focused on adoption be a general / non-technical user. Ideally, with scannable bullet points"

This is 100% exactly what I am trying to do with the website at fedi.tips

Next #BikeNite is this Friday at 4pm Pacific _daylight_ time (UTC-7)!

This is our weekly call for questions. Reply with any you'd like me to add to the discussion on Friday. Please add the BikeNitePQ hashtag so it's easier to find a Proposed Question. There is room for more. I know there are some questions that have already been submitted since last week, and I will be adding them before Friday's BikeNite.

(BikeNite is a Q&A type discussion on the Fediverse.)

It is a REALLY good idea to write an introductory post about yourself and pin it to your profile. Pinned posts appear at the top of your profile page, and they also have a special ability to federate much more widely than ordinary posts.

It's very quick and easy to do:

➡️ fedi.tips/how-do-i-pin-my-post…

Here's why it matters: there's a quirk on Mastodon where some profiles may appear blank to people on some servers, but profiles with pinned posts never look blank to anyone!

I wonder if instead of trying to fetch all posts and storing them on the local database, there could just be a more robust solution to interacting with posts on other instances and then when you click on a profile, it can just go to their instance or it embeds the post view from their instances like news articles embed social media posts.

Similarly when you click on a post it just embeds what the replies in the author's instance look like. Though at least the not seeing all replies issue is getting fixed by other means

Make No Mistake, Trump Is Turning the US Into a Police State

The arrest and detention of Mahmoud Khalil is a blatant attack on the civil liberties without which there can be no meaningful democracy for anyone. Our dark days are getting darker by the moment.

The arrest of Khalil Mahmoud is an offense to every citizen of the United States, and it sets a precedent that endangers us all.

Our dark time is getting darker by the day.

Astounding!! Finally you can see the cover of the anthology I've been working on for the past couple of years with co-editors @older and Karen Lord! "We Will Rise Again" is full of essays, interviews, and speculative stories about protest, social movements, and hopeful resistance -- all informed by the experiences of real-life movement leaders and community organizers.
in reply to Annalee Newitz 🍜

I am so proud and grateful to be part of the amazing group of folks who contributed to the anthology.

Hi, I’m Ellie.

I’ve jumped to Mastodon after realising (again) how toxic big tech is. Trump and Musk’s obsession with controlling social media sealed it—I miss when it was about connecting, not just a tool for the rich to twist public opinion.

I’ll post a little bit about politics (Carol Cadwalladr fan!) but also pretty pictures, my pet, and travel snaps. Looking forward to actual conversations—not just whatever the algorithm wants me to see.

in reply to Su_G

absolutely! Hardly ever heard from real people on the huge platforms- Only pushed sales and click bait. Thankyou I've popped them a follow.

@FediTips

Questions -
If I start a second Mastodon account, do I have the option that the muted word list transfers to the new account, or does it have to rebuilt from scratch?
- Same question, but regarding muted and blocked individual users?

in reply to Anonomouse13

You can't copy filters to other accounts.

However, you can copy mutes and blocks.

You can copy your follows, bookmarks, lists, mutes, blocks and domain blocks to any other account whenever you want using the CSV files that are usually used for transferring accounts.

If you look at the transfer guide and do steps 2 and 3, you can use these steps even if you're running two accounts at once instead of transferring accounts:

I am playing around with #Obsidian to see if I can use it in my workflow for blog writing on my website. I tried #Tangent really quickly but it just stays on a loading screen when creating a workspace?

An evening of reading can help you unwind and prepare for the next day. What's on your reading list tonight?

I’m still not ready to do livestreaming. I’m far too tired, and need another night to rest. So I’m cancelling my livestream tonight that was scheduled from 7-9:00pm.

BUT--I’ll be trying something new tomorrow. A daytime livestream from 1-3:00pm. More info coming!

My sincerest apologies to all. I just need one more night to recharge my batteries. I’ll be refreshed tomorrow.

JFC the basic core of human society is that we look after each other, tens of thousands of years ago those of us out berry picking and hunting shared everything with the old, the injured and the young, not everyone can work to survive, so we share with them. it's like basic human 101. fucks sake. aargh
in reply to saraaaaargh

isn't there some million year old human skeleton with a healed broken leg, so they must have been cared for and loved and looked after even though they were no longer able to hunt or whatever
in reply to saraaaaargh

I seriously doubt our distant ancestors allowed one of their own to horde all the berries, take everyone elses berries, and then they all stood around going "wow what a genius" while starving to death

"Bring your whole self to work!"

Given that I exist in several universes, a goodly number of star systems, numerous continents, and at least two Waffle Houses, I'm not sure there's enough space at work for all of me. Or I should say, for all versions of me.

Maybe we could try time sharing this body.
