New year, new #Wikipedia list.

Billy Craigie was an Aboriginal Australian activist who was one of the original people creating the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra protesting the government's Australia Day statement on land rights (supporting leasing of the people's ancestral lands). They set up a beach umbrella, camped out, got arrested, started a movement. We had a photo of him in Flickr Commons so I wrote this up.

I am such a goof here but I took a perfectly good joke from @kfan and ruined it by making a Wikipedia page about Yoichi Hori. His account is locked but I think it's probably ok to grab the joke here.... (re: people and their Teslas talking about getting them "before they knew" etc)

Not a lot is publicly known about Jessie Telfair except that she was a quilter, working as an elementary school cafeteria worker in the town where she was born in Georgia. She was inspired to register to vote by SNCC. When her employer found out, they fired her. She was then inspired to make this red, white, and blue quilt saying FREEDOM. It was purchased by a folklife collector and, further inspired, she made three more. They now all hang in museums.

A new #GreenpeaceUK investigation exposed a brutal reality: since #Brexit, giant #SuperTrawlers have spent 37,000 hours fishing inside the #UK โ€™s Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Thatโ€™s the equivalent of 4 years and 3 months killing every single hour a day. Destroying #habitats and wiping out #fish populations, all while the UK government does nothing to stop them.

#Supertrawlers spent 7,380 hours fishing in #UK #MarineProtectedAreas each year since #Brexit

by Alexandra Sedgwick | March 11, 2025

An investigation by #GreenpeaceUK reveals today that giant supertrawlers relentlessly continue to catch fish in the UKโ€™s Marine Protected Areas, damaging precious #MarineHabitats and #FishPopulations, despite the UK government having had the powers to stop them since Brexit and committing to protect at least 30% of #UKWaters by 2030.

A close friend who works there got the message today (furloughed by email on a Saturday). They were more upset about those in the other countries they served who are now at greater risk than themselves.

I am saddened. I was raised under VOA just outside Cincinnati, Ohio. The mission. The purpose. I could see the tower beacons for the first 18 years of my life laying in my bed. Some people counted sheep. I don't know how many thousands of times I stared at those beacons blinking until I feel asleep. I am heartbroken. #VOA

Holy crap. The DOJ is arguing that the President can unilaterally deport anyone he wants without ANY statutory authority, just on his inherent authority as President over national security.

That is a terrifying claim to make and not one that has ever been recognized before in US history.

Well said! I had a similar, much more brief post a few years ago because everybody expected the mod team to be perfect and know everything about anything and it made for some unhappy campers when they found out we weren't and I didn't feel like investing hours into learning a subject I wasn't interested in.

There is little that was not established by Congress.

Last I checked, Congress still controls funding.

I'm looking to sell these Rogue Trader (RTB01) Imperial Space Marines, as they have a certain collectible value. Boosts appreciated.

Found lots more pieces I remembered I had, but could not locate.

Price has been reduced to 85โ‚ฌ+shipping

I'm glad to inform that there's a bit of interest, so I may sold it fast (good news for me)

Alpine and Chimera have broken my ability to use Debian based distros. My fingers automatically type `apk` instead of `apt`. Doesn't happen when I'm using Arch though as `paru` is different enough to not trigger my brain's auto-correct.

Over the past year I've been working on a video for "Horsetail," a song from my latest album, Five Thousand Feathers. Several locations, a lot of editing, shooting some extra footage, learning about various types of processing and how to use some new more powerful software, and now it's finally finished!

Film-making is something that I am becoming more and more interested in, and I've learnt a lot during the process.

Itโ€™s nonsense. A judge just ruled they canโ€™t. Theyโ€™re doing it anyway.

Every one of these actions is a test balloon. Every one is the same question: โ€œWhat can we get away with?โ€

And every time the response is anything short of a political punch in the face, they call it a success and try the next thing too.

This is what gets me about the question, "Zomg, what to do if he doesn't follow court orders?"

If he can get away with it, he will not follow court orders. We've only seen the "What can I get away with?" movie run about 500 times so far.

And the answer so far has been, "Everything."

He's going to keep doing absolutely all the shit until the big guns show up and haul him off to Rikers Island (I wish). There's no other language he understands.

Just voted to withold on the REI board candidates. Having someone with more experience with labor negotiations would make sense for the co-op, and I'm disappointed that they blocked that candidate from the board.

Grateful to these journalists who explained the situation in a detailed and balanced way.

๐Ÿšจ new....kind of new??? .... developer science from me! ๐Ÿšจ

I have significantly updated the preprint manuscript for our AI Skill Threat study: it now includes a richly descriptive (I hope) overview of identity threat, has integrated many fresh references and sources of wisdom about developers since our first rough draft report, and more fully explicates our theory for how and why learning & belonging help mitigate threat experiences for developers

osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/2gejโ€ฆ

in reply to Dr. Cat Hicks

And why care about that? Well, because they're powerful....AND changeable. Many factors that have been proposed as key factors in developer experience, or as correlates of development outcomes, do NOT show promise as intervention targets. Our work tests factors that do: ability beliefs are malleable and have been the subject of many promising interventions
in reply to Dr. Cat Hicks

In my quest to advocate for the importance of seeing developers as WHOLE people, with WHOLE psychologies (not just brains in jars), I wrote:

"Feeling that an important identity is threatened is recognized as a highly impactful experience which can shape human behavior, and which takes diverse forms. For instance, in being categorized against oneโ€™s will, in feeling oneโ€™s identity-based value being undermined, or in experiencing threats to the acceptance or distinctiveness of oneโ€™s identity"
