Experimenting with clocking the modular from an expression pedal. A combination between tap tempo and ramp-based sequencing, in a way. Tapping gives a downbeat, and lifting the foot generates subdivisions. When all the way up, a steady clock is output (at a rate determined by the downbeats). Work-in-progress. One step (lol) closer. Will require some practice, but already very fun!

Wow. The US Treasury Dept. today announced it is lifting sanctions on Tornado Cash, a cryptocurrency mixing service that state-sponsored hackers from North Korea have been massively using to launder their stolen billions.

"Based on the Administration’s review of the novel legal and policy issues raised by use of financial sanctions against financial and commercial activity occurring within evolving technology and legal environments, we have exercised our discretion to remove the economic sanctions against Tornado Cash as reflected in Treasury’s Monday filing in Van Loon v. Department of the Treasury."

h/t to @ncweaver for the heads up. Weaver said: "The US government has just said "money laundering is legal as long as the process is automated."

"Every wei that flows through Tornado Cash, even if 'legitimate,' is helping the North Korean nuclear regime by hiding illegitimate flows," Weaver told me.

(1 of 3) Let's talk about #EmotionalIntelligence : It's not just a buzzword; It's key to understanding yourself and your interactions.

Emotional Intelligence is your ability to recognize, understand, and manage your own emotions. It's about being aware, being present, and being mindful in your relationships.

And speaking of relationships, let's dive into some real talk about friendships. It's Friend Friday, and I'm sharing how my connections impact my energy.

First up, the "Broadcaster." You know the type. They constantly blast information, rarely pausing for a breath. It's nice to share, but sometimes, you just want to be seen or to be asked, "How are YOU doing?" instead of just being a witness to their endless monologue. It's about connection, not just transmission.

If you think that's funny, think again.

Dismantling of the educational system is all this is about, because stupid people are easier to manipulate. Meaning misspellings are a success, in the eyes of those pursuing the agenda.

@lritter I agree with your question and assessment; EA has/had some subfactions that are weird but overall remains a sensible and good movement IMHO
in reply to Cassandrich

@dalias @flancian flancian just change the name of what you believe in (which i'm sure is good), the label "Effective Altruism" is evidently burned
in reply to michiel

@michiel @flancian @lritter Um, no, don't try to appropriate the language of social justice as an implement of fascism.

"A group" in the sense of people who have joined a movement/cult with fascist ideology is not the same thing as "a group" of people defined by the circumstances of their birth, the culture they grew up in, etc.

Effective Altruism is and always has been a technofascist futurist eugenicist cult. There is nothing altrusitic about any of it.

in reply to Leonard Ritter

@lritter @michiel @flancian I'm not your encyclopedia. I'm not going to respond to demands to prove well-known fascists are fascists. I'm going to report the folks who keep trying to legitimize them here.
in reply to Leonard Ritter

@lritter @dalias @michiel I've read the wikipedia article on EA, I don't think it discredits the movement at all despite what fringe people within the movement might have believed, or believe. It needs to be OK not to cancel a huge human group because of beliefs of say a 5% (to make up a number, choose one?) subset.

Also I hope you're not proposing reporting this conversation as I think it's been very respectful? But happy to discuss if you think any part was out of line!

in reply to In #Flancia we'll meet

@flancian @lritter @michiel We have a "no fascism" rule and promoting fascism "respectfully" does not bypass the rule.

The Wikipedia article is not the authority on whether EA is "discredited". You can do your own research into *who the people behind it are* and *what else they believe/promote/do*. I'm not talking about rando EA adherents you might meet. I'm talking about founders, organizers, follow the money, etc.

in reply to Cassandrich

@dalias @lritter @michiel I know the work of Peter Singer, William MacAskill and Toby Ord reasonably well and I can vouch for at least the first two, in particular Peter Singer. I consider them all founders (Peter Singer's thought of course predates EA by long) and there's essentially zero chance they are fascists.

So I understand you seem frustrated with EA but these are strong claims with no backing I'm aware of. If not Wikipedia, what sources should I search/read?

in reply to In #Flancia we'll meet

@flancian @lritter @michiel The TESCREAL paper. Also, at least William MacAskill is intimately associated with crypto & AI scam crowds. "Zero chance they are fascists" sounds like you aren't well-grounded in what fascism is...
in reply to Cassandrich

@dalias @michiel @lritter sorry but this is just not true -- I know many people in the movement and I trust their intentions fully. I think statistically speaking, at the very least, most people who participated in mainstream EA activities (like thinking about causes, donating to them, etc.) are as far from 'racist eugenicists' or fascists as I could imagine -- and I say this as an anarchist and an anti-fascist.
in reply to In #Flancia we'll meet

@flancian @dalias @michiel @lritter the techfash have been heavy in it for 15 years. i know a lot of people in EA too and this is still true. EA is three or four movements in a trenchcoat, but one of those is the AI doom cultists who are straight up tech fash race scientists. the rest of EA tries to pretend they somehow don't count, but also has not in 15 years lifted a finger to eject them.

please do not try to BS on this

in reply to David Gerard

@davidgerard @flancian @dalias @lritter the techfash have been heavily into open source for far longer; a lot of the funding for it came from the same oligarchs that had front-row seats at 47's inauguration. Many of the foundations that have some kind of governance role are outright owned by big tech.

Like @lritter says, the reputation of any movement that's open to rich donors can be co-opted by them.

At the same time, they can't co-opt the motives and work of the members.

in reply to michiel

@michiel @flancian @dalias @lritter @eARCwelder@mastodon.EA is rather more rotten from them, however. Saying "but other unrelated things are good" is not evidence EA is good.
This entry was edited (5 months ago)
in reply to David Gerard

@davidgerard @flancian @dalias @lritter I'm saying "the evidence that supposedly "proves" EA is fascist can be applied to many other groups' (and don't get me started on that shitty TESCREAL paper). But I'm as tired of this discussion as you are.
in reply to michiel

@michiel @flancian@social.coop @dalias @lritter dude they're literally full of race scientists and neoreactionaries. at this point it's not clear what *would* convince you.
in reply to David Gerard

@davidgerard @dalias @lritter Actually, upon reading Gleiberman's "strategic ambiguity" paper, I'm convinced that EA is rotten at the core (despite appearances). I got there using your website, so a belated thanks.
in reply to michiel

What is there to the EA movement that's good besides the common sense idea of putting a little effort into checking your charitable efforts actually do some good? Because that isn't exactly a "movement," which EA is.

@michiel @dalias @flancian @lritter @eARCwelder

in reply to PhDog

@dogfox @michiel @flancian @lritter The "movement" aspect is entirely a cult, built to launder technofascist-patriarchal ideas into a framing where they can be called "altruistic".

If you actually want to do good, just do it. There is no value in associating with a cult that happens to be linked to the people out to end democracy and labor rights and plunge us into a neofeudal future "for the sake of survival of the species".

in reply to Cassandrich

@dalias @dogfox @michiel @lritter I do good and I like it, and I do it publicly, and I try to do it rationally -- and that is all influenced by Effective Altruism and all other kinds of "isms", like Buddhism, and I posit that I should be free as a sentient being to practice this way and nobody should damn my intentions just because of my associations with Effective Altruism in the past or the present or the future, given that I keep my own friends and I like them very much.
in reply to Cassandrich

@dalias @dogfox @michiel @lritter to agree with the last part -- Yarvin is one of the few beings I would openly tell: go fuck yourself, because you're unfuckable
in reply to Cassandrich

@dalias @lritter this is totally me, and I think it's a reasonable position 😀 although I understand that people have had negative experiences with some people in the movement or adjacent, effective altruism is very diverse like any large human group and IMHO is disproportionately made up of overall good people. I think it needs to be OK to say that, happy to discuss further!
in reply to In #Flancia we'll meet

@flancian @lritter There are some good people who got roped into the cult by the evil people pushing it. They need help getting out not legitimization of the cult.

in reply to Emily Velasco

I would loose my marbles over that.

I think I just did. And I'm thousands of miles away. 😵‍💫

I am way more excited about these now that I have them home, very glad I didn’t balk at what I thought was a high, but was actually a low price. My old SE, later upgraded to an SE/30, was really my first computer. Feels so good to have one again. These are supposed to both work. I will crack them open later today and check on the batteries. #MacSE #retrocomputing

So far this year @ProPublica has reported on who's working for #DOGE, the impacts of cuts on agencies like #USAID, and a lot more. Reporting on abuses of power matters more than ever before.

This is the last day of our spring member drive you can give as a member. As always, I would love the #fediverse to be represented in our member base. It matters.

If you have the means, please consider joining as a member through a gift of any amount: give.propublica.org/give/34642… #journalism
