Need a hopeful story? 22 students at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, 4 years ago, set out to "really inspire people and the market and society to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable future. What we’re trying to do is to show people and show companies what’s already possible.”

So they made a #solarpunk campervan fully equipped with living essentials including a double bed, sofa, kitchen area and a bathroom with a shower, sink and toilet. It can fit two people, who can drive, cook breakfast and watch television using just the vehicle’s solar-charged battery.

Then they took it on a tour of Europe driving 1,200 miles without stopping for fuel or plugging in to charge. cnn.com/travel/article/stella-…

Zuck said Meta is in a "partnership" with White House; Google is following suit. They are all that stand between you and Trump admin data grabs.

Law enforcement requests for user data from Apple, Google, and Meta mean Big tech can decide whether US authorities have access to your personal info, like location data.

Meanwhile, Europeans are starting to see US data services as “no longer safe”

Here's a resource collection of non-US services, and more:

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Anime off the shoulder of Orion. Anime at the Tannhauser gate. All those anime will be lost in time, like tears in the rain, like in an anime. Time to watch anime.

in reply to The Conversation U.S.

I am sad to say this has become practically impossible for me. All of my life, I have not only believed this, I have practiced this - having the difficult conversations. As a home-based therapist working to help people with court-ordered services, I have sat in homes displaying the Confederate flag and listened to subtle and not so subtle racist messages. As a diversity trainer, I’ve facilitated uncomfortable conversations. I’m at a place I’ve never been.

It’s #Friday folks!
…what the…what the…
It’s Friday?
Last time I was here it was only Monday…
Where did that week go?

We’ll deal with that later.

In the meantime have the best #weekend you can.
You know the drill:

Be #gentle
Be #true

And don’t be a Nazi.

Here’s one I made earlier

I prefer a formal language to describe “contracts” in the type system and static analysis.

BUT, I think it would also be funny to use embeddings to find out what a function does just reading its declaration.

For instance
void x_destroy(struct X * p)
What this functions does?

I will try do to that for fun.

Let's dry some aliexpress nylon filament.

No idea if it is PA6 or PA12, but whatevs.

It's been drying about 5h already, but I could clearly hear the steam crackling when I tried it this morning, so I assume it needs a really good drying.

in reply to Nixie

Took me a frew tries, and printbed glue, but it seems to be printing now.

I think using the 0,8mm nozzle is not the best for this kind of detailed work, but I don't want to change nozzles until I get the 0,6mm one.

But why go all the way to print it in nylon? so I can dessicate the beads back again inside the same container.

Took another crack at using FreeCAD today, now that it's officially 1.0. To its credit, it hasn't segfaulted on me once yet, which is improvement.

It still does a lot of surprising things with no user feedback, particularly around removing constraints when it decides things are redundant (and doing so incorrectly). You really have to understand its mental model, without a lot of help, which I don't think is a good property in a UI.

But, I have designed a part, and hope to try printing it later this week!

@chrishuck I'd actually be interested in your nitpicking, since I'm learning! If you have time.

There is something to be said for not including some hidden lines for clarity, but generally, it’s a good idea to show them always.

Most of the rest is including centerlines and trying to keep dimensions off of the object.

It took me a second to realize it was first-angle projection…

I can’t remember if there’s a way to turn off tangent edges in FreeCAD, but that would help too.

Happy to answer any questions. There are certainly different ways to dimension things.

in reply to cliffle

You’re welcome! You might look for drafting books at your local library. Not much has changed through the decades.
in reply to josyb

@josyb I’m curious as to why? I wouldn’t if the part wasn’t cylindrical. That is, unless there was a hole passing through it.
in reply to josyb

@josyb A good reference:

gdandtbasics.com/using-centerl…

Center lines indicate circular or cylindrical features, even if no dimension uses the center line.

in reply to Chris Huck

@chrishuck FWIW, FreeCAD calls tangent edges "Smooth Visible" for whatever reason; it can be disabled on a per-view basis.

I'm assuming you're from the states? I haven't seen anywhere else use third-angle. (I did find the knob in FreeCAD though!)

in reply to cliffle

@chrishuck ...also, amusingly, I have found my first reliable crash bug in 1.0... in the automatic add centerline tool.

Evidently if you add a centerline to the wrong kind of entity, it just up and segfaults. yaaaaaay c

in reply to cliffle

I’ll admit that I don’t usually do any drawings for things I design in FreeCAD because they are generally going right to the 3D printer. I should learn more about how it works.

On the flip side, I do drawings in SolidWorks nearly every day at work because the things I design there are going to a machine shop or welding shop.

I am from the states, and I do find myself catching the first angle projection in catalogs from everywhere else. Have to be careful!

I have been investigating Discord alternatives for a while. If you want to self-host and like frugal software, IRC is the way to go. If you like federation so that multiple people can host the same channels, ngircd is what I use. For users who don’t like IRC clients, I recommend you install The Lounge. If you use it with accounts, users can upload images, too.

If you need voice chats, use mumble. If you need video, I am hoping to give Galène a try.

All the other solutions I saw need a lot more resources (subdomains, docker images, separate database servers and so on).
