NEW: CTV has cancelled an election fact-checking segment on their morning show in response to political pressure from the Conservative Party.

Sebastian Skamski, a senior campaign official for Mr #Poilievre denounced CTV News, saying their guest was lying directly to viewers & suggested that CTV News is working to help elect Liberals.

Despite Mr Skamski offering no evidence to support his claims, the network folded & cancelled the segment.

Seen outside a local hospital: an upside-down American flag. Traditionally, it's a distress sign, though per npr.org/2024/06/03/nx-s1-49875… it’s regularly been used as a political statement by both right and left. Right now, given the clown in charge of public health in the US, it seems entirely appropriate for a hospital to be displaying it.

"This is an American moral moment. ..where do we stand for health care? Where do we stand for Social Security? Where do we stand for VA benefits? Where do we stand for our American neighbor? When the call & commandment of every faith in our land is to love your neighbor. What's the quality of our love America? Now's the time to get angry, but let that anger fuel you. Now's your time to get scared for what's happening to your neighbors & let that fear bring about your courage.

For those wondering what good #CoryBooker’s 19+ hour (and counting) #Senate speech will do….not only is it being broadcast live by major news and media outlets (AP, MSNBC, CBS, etc.), but even my conservative right-leaning crappy local tv station has taken note. This station rarely pushes back on trump, and usually sugarcoats everything he does. Most people in my area either eagerly accept RW lies or are largely uninformed. This article is on the main page, so it’s a big deal imo.

I wanted to quickly explain why school kids should learn markdown instead of MS Office, and ended up writing a major Epos on Markdown vs obsolete writing formats:

in reply to blaine

in my experience (in particular, implementing and improving a CMS whose primary editing interface was markdown [not my idea] for Condé Nast writers and editors), beyond the most basic concepts like bold and italic, non-technical people really struggle with markdown.

I think this is because markdown _is_ html: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Gene…

I've talked and thought a lot about markdown, and I like to say that Gruber didn't invent it as much as he re-discovered it.

in reply to blaine

html is hard to learn. Markdown is slightly easier, but e.g., link syntax is decidedly not obvious. Once we start introducing more complicated syntaxes, it goes sideways into a realm of total non-comprehension very quickly.

I think this is all in-line with your argument, but I guess I would add that it's maybe worth adding a giant warning sign that while limited, situated markdown can be great, it shouldn't be put in load-bearing situations that it's unsuited for.

in reply to blaine

@blaine markdown doesn't even have a defined syntax for tables. It's way limited. A lot of comments here have recommended RST as a better alternative —personally I would go with AsciiDoc(tor). The same principles of simplicity and “structure first, layout after” apply, but you actually get a wide range of technically useful features at hand
