My confidence has risen during my transition mostly in line with how passing I’ve felt, but takes a hit when I’m worried a stranger has clocked me (which can be triggered as easily as someone looking at me for slightly too long). I know this is something I need to work on, so today I embraced visibility and marched with a trans flag at Pride for the first time.

Later on, while I was queuing at one of the food stalls, a middle-aged woman came up to me and said ā€œYou look really cuteā€.

While I was walking home, a group of guys walking the other way serenaded me with ā€œMysterious Girlā€. I wasn’t sure how to interpret that.

# "I didn't pay attention and ended up on an all-male panel"

A blogpost as a reminder to myself to pay more attention in future.

There's no excuse for all-male panels, such as the one I ended up on this week. I needed to pay more attention, and didn't.

@dentangle @revk Yeah, but that's only necessary if people think "I am a woman/young/old/trans/black/whatever person" first and foremost instead of seeing themselves simply as a person with certain interests, skills, drive etc.
in reply to Light

@light @dentangle @revk That's a very privileged position to take.

Lots of people would love to just see themselves just as people with certain interests. Society won't let them. It reminds them every day that they're not one of the CIS White majority. They have to go above and beyond to prove themselves constantly.

The shooting in #Minnesota of both #Democrat lawmakers in a "politically motivated assassination" is no surprise. It was the next escalation by the Trump/MAGA cult. #USPol

Be safe and alert out there today, #NoKings

Minnesota Rep. Hortman and husband killed, Sen. Hoffman and wife wounded in politically motivated shooting, Gov. Walz says

The shooter, dressed as a police officer, driving what appeared to be an unmarked law enforcement vehicle was found to have a hit list of other Democratic politicians in his car.

Local TV news is reporting they suspect 57-year-old Vance Boelter, twice appointed to the nonpartisan Governor’s Workforce Development Council in 2016 under former Gov. Mark Dayton and again in reappointed in 2019 under Gov. Tim Walz, with term ending in 2023, to be the shooter.

(This doesn't mean he worked for Waltz. It was a nonpartisan panel)

No drizzle - nice sunshine this evening at the #MellonInstitute steps here in #Pittsburgh for the #StandUpForScience Vigil
We have a poster board with names of cancelled grants at #CarnegieMellon and #Pitt and paper for people to write down why they do, or how they've been affected by cuts to #Science or why it's important to them
Lots of sidewalk chalk messages from people too.
Continuous trickle of people coming up to speak for few minutes.
in reply to Das

So many people coming forward to speak up for #Science
Scientists, grant administrators, long retired professors from Pitt Med school, undergraduates and grad students from #Pitt and #CarnegieMellon
Non scientists too
They kept coming up! So awesome. One undergrad (here for summer research) mentioned how hopeful this gathering and speakers made her.

(Won't post their pics/faces here - but it was super encouraging)

One of my kids wants to see if there is any truth in the old phrase that #Norwich has a #church for every week and a #pub for every day…

They are keen to see the churches, I’m more curious about the pubs!

Ecclesiastical architecture won today…must have looked at 15 places of worship in the space of an hour and a half! Most were shut or used for different purposes…that’s been the case for decades. I don’t feel sad, because I’m not religious - but churches are part of our city street scene.

in reply to Juggling With Eggs

To my untrained eye, one medieval church looks much like the next I have to confess…I like details like clocks, sundials and round towers that differentiate them!

But the oddest church we came across was St Mary the Less on Queen St. It’s bricked up and virtually walled in on all sides. But it has an intriguing link back to the #Strangers - the #Dutch people who came to #Norwich because of their weaving skills and gave us the city’s emblem - the canary!

Today we found Stranger’s gate open…

in reply to Juggling With Eggs

There was a sense of mystery and abandonment about the place …but someone clearly wanted to celebrate the connection between #Norwich and the Low Countries from the frayed, warn out displays we found propped up in the tiny yard outside St Mary the Less.
in reply to Juggling With Eggs

It's definitely an eccentric church. I visited in 2010 and got a tour from the owner. At the time it was a very dusty, privately owned Dutch study centre, and the church was in need of repair.

If you're curious / want to visit, you probably get a response from the owner if you post a hand-written letter under the door!

in reply to Rob O'Hare

@rohare

Intriguing! When you say ā€˜Dutch study centre’…I came across this account:

ā€˜When I first visited here in the mid-1990s, the church had just been sold by the same trust which, amazingly, had been formed in 1832 to convey ownership of the lease to the Swedenborgians. The building was bought by a curious organisation which proclaimed itself the Dutch and Flemish studies centre’

norfolkchurches.co.uk/norwichm…

in reply to Juggling With Eggs

That's right, though the "organisation" is (or was) really just one person. He was very friendly, and I now remember I was hoping to organise Dutch language classes in the church. That never happened, partly because communicating via pen and paper was rather awkward!

The photos are from 2010.

in reply to Rob O'Hare

@rohare

Thanks for sharing the photos! The handwritten quirkiness of all the signs now totally makes sense. Did you manage to get the Dutch language classes take off elsewhere in Norwich?

in reply to Juggling With Eggs

No, unfortunately not. This was after Norfolk Adult Education had scrapped a Dutch for Beginners course I had organised. There were a handful of learners who wanted to continue but it didn't work out.

I think the Merchant House nowadays has informal language meetups for people learning French and German. Something like that would have been perfect.

in reply to Rob O'Hare

@rohare

That’s a real shame. I don’t understand why Norwich doesn’t do more to encourage Dutch connections and language learning given our history and the fact that Dutch is apparently one of the closest and easiest languages to learn if you speak English.

A yet at large suspect shot two Minnesota state lawmakers along with their spouses.

The suspect killed Rep Melissa Hortman and her husband. He shot Sen. John Hoffman and his wife—they are hospitalized.

It appears the suspect is dressed to impersonate law enforcement. My deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones.

Y’all please be safe out there today. Travel in groups and have a plan to meet up at an agreed upon time and place.
