My confidence has risen during my transition mostly in line with how passing Iβve felt, but takes a hit when Iβm worried a stranger has clocked me (which can be triggered as easily as someone looking at me for slightly too long). I know this is something I need to work on, so today I embraced visibility and marched with a trans flag at Pride for the first time.
Later on, while I was queuing at one of the food stalls, a middle-aged woman came up to me and said βYou look really cuteβ.
While I was walking home, a group of guys walking the other way serenaded me with βMysterious Girlβ. I wasnβt sure how to interpret that.

I want people who are not middle-aged, cis, white men like me to think "Yeah, I can do this too".
They are more likely to think that if they see people more like them on panel.
I don't see this as particularly controversial or surprising, and I can't see a good reason why someone would *not* support it.

Lots of people would love to just see themselves just as people with certain interests. Society won't let them. It reminds them every day that they're not one of the CIS White majority. They have to go above and beyond to prove themselves constantly.
I am a person with skills, knowledge, interests, etc.
When I work on a project, it is primarily that mix that I want to bring, the domain knowledge that is forefront of my mind, and the directly relevant skills I bring to bear.
But time and again, in male-dominated industries like law and software, the fact that I'm a woman has been held against me.
For example, I've been pulled up on saying something in a slightly harsh tone, when nobody said anything about or to the man who shouted and hit the table.
I've been talked over and ignored, only to see a man listened to for saying the same thing.
I've been questioned by my boss about having "lots" of medical appointments after a regular review of my hormonal contraceptives.
How can I leave my gender out of it when other people don't?
@jetlagjen @light @dentangle @revk Absolutely this! I worked at a company where I was not allowed to share an office with another developer because "the women should sit together" and I was the only woman on the development team. I ended up sharing with the technical writer instead.
These systemic barriers are real and can be deeply intractable.
