PSA: for the last two weeks I have had a bad cold that morphed into a sinus infection that morphed into bronchitis and I tried the “gently power through it” strategy but have had to trade down to the “rest and fluids and meds” method of healing. 😷

I remember reading a Cory Doctorow story that included something like this. Every object was tracked and recorded in a database, there was a big set of drawers and you could look up the item and the drawer that contained it would light up.
There are a few standards for this, though I'm having trouble finding good data on accuracy, other than "sub-meter". the systems i've seen deployed tend to be BLE with range based on RSSI, which is not particularly accurate.
BLE 5.1 has a standard for measuring angle of attack with an antenna array, which can work for positioning. There's also "UWB" which can do angle of attack and time of flight ranging, but every time i try to figure out how to use it i get confused by all the competing standards and give up.
i also can't find any great data for accuracy of any of the systems.
if you can find some cheap radio emitters with a steady and accurate frequency, you can make some sort of differential timing detection system by comparing where in the wave form you are for 3 sources, and use that to determine a location in 3D. I have seen that with robots, and accuracy is sub centimeter
