@lx Heh, I didn't record the whole thing, just because I was too lazy to cut that footage and store an extra like 2 GB of terminal output recording 😁

That’s a shame.. I guess I’ll revert back to watching paint dry 😉

I've been sitting on this story for months:

The best iPad apps I've used lately are…web apps. Groundbreaking iPad-only apps are now a lost art, and only Apple is to blame.

Assholes keep scolding people for not breaking out of their "echo chamber". Meanwhile I'm trying my hardest to minimise the amount of right-wing and fascist nonsense I'm exposed to in my life but having about as much success as I would have playing whackamole against a wave of army ants.

After few days with my keyboard I know that it needs to be redone. Not fixed - redone.

It is too floppy now.

The worst part of it: I need to check 3d modeling software.

Something which will take 2d svg/dxf, allow to extrude it, edit and finally export stl.

Without spending month on finding options or reading/watching tutorials.

in reply to Marcin Juszkiewicz

I usually just use openscad for that, but it's not great for the "edit it" part.

Question for those who have online jobs, if equipment is required for the job, is it a bad look if they offer financial support to purchase the equipment? #OnlineJobs, #Work, #Jobs
in reply to Nick's world 🌎 👨‍🦯

Not to me. I would expect any employer to cover the cost of any equipment that you might need for the role.
in reply to David Goldfield

sadly you can get really bad deals if it's not a W-2 but a 1099-type employment deal, since then you're expected to bring your own stuff. Usually though collecting info about your bank or deposit comes after they've verified and you've filled out the W-2 stuff, if they're a legit employer that is. I've always seen in that order. It's also why some tech companies have clearly made their contract hiring through W-2 staffing agencies, rather than directly contracting them out as 1099 employees, of course it puts the burden of paying for all employee costs on the staffing agency, but they typically take a cut from the hourly rate of the client a bit to make up for that. And it's not that 1099-employment is bad in and of itself, it's just that then you have to prepare to pay for your own stuff and track all receipts for tax purposes, which is not as great when starting out on an employment path.

Spring cleaning exists because people with seasonal allergies go "wtf, it's winter, I shouldn't have seasonal allergy symptoms now", and by the time they actually get around to cleaning, it's spring

i was trying to think of another brand that has had wide spread massice demonstration against it. i can’t think of any on the scale Tesla has had, where it feels more general and distinct activist groups. everything else has been boycotted campaigns or extreme acts like the Boots bombings in the UK by an animal rights group.

i find this very hopeful. more than just silently ‘voting with your wallet’ - agency and action

Sometimes a group of lawyers can come to be regarded almost universally as crooks. Anyone remember Prenda Law, the group of porn-uploading copyright trolls who ran an extortionate scam? Rather quickly they were regarded across the national legal community as crooks and widely distrusted. /1

/2 It’s past time that the government lawyers appearing for the administration in cases challenging its lawlessness come to be viewed that way: as a fraud gang, their conduct and representations and arguments inherently suspicious and unworthy of trust or belief.

It's difficult for me to believe that Baba Is You is nowhere near even a decade old. It feels more like a found thing than a game, almost a koan; the reverent way mathematicians talk about deep, unexpected relationships being discovered rather than invented.

Drought expanded in parts of the Southwest, South, and Eastern US this week on the US #Drought Monitor, even as it eased in adjacent areas. Drought coverage decreased slightly to 43.59%, a drop of 0.82 points. Soil moisture is low in parts of the country as planting season nears.

A friend was in the Toronto area last weekend and got this scam SMS today. Quite a coincidence. Is it possible that the scammers are using Stingray-type devices to scrape phone numbers for this kind of thing? I don't know much about the devices or how they work, just that they exist.

sls.eff.org/technologies/cell-…

I keep and edit these to train relatives. This one ticks all the boxes:
✓ Non-local (West Virginia in this case) area code (not shown)
✓ Scary language to throw the recipient off balance
✓ Chinese URL
✓ Standard scammer tactic to make the link (and any forthcoming) links active by inviting a reply

Much more likely that some app is gathering geolocation data through something like WiFi SSIDs and then selling the data.

Revealed: How the UK tech secretary uses ChatGPT for policy advice

New Scientist has used freedom of information laws to obtain the ChatGPT records of Peter Kyle, the UK's technology secretary, in what is believed to be a world-first use of such legislation

From newscientist.com/article/24720…

These records show that Kyle asked ChatGPT to explain why the UK’s small and medium business (SMB) community has been so slow to adopt AI. ChatGPT returned a 10-point list of problems hindering adoption, including sections on “Limited Awareness and Understanding”, “Regulatory and Ethical Concerns” and “Lack of Government or Institutional Support”.

Apparently it didn't say "because it's unhelpful and probably harmful to most SMB problems" or "what on earth are you doing asking a computer this you fool?".

I finally got around to moving all my DNS records away from Cloudlflare, something I should have done years ago.
in reply to Joel Chippindale

And then I had to switch Ethical Book Search back to Cloudflare because I realised that I was relying on their GeoIP Location to add a header to requests to include the country the request was made from.

I will still move away, but a yak shave is required first.

Suggestions for a replacement for this GeoIP location service welcomed.

I’m not sure if either of these do what you’re after and I’ve not looked in to them fully myself yet but they were both recommended to me as Cloudflare alternatives:

It hurts me to say this, as an #American, but people need to avoid the #USA for 2 years, at least, 2027, when the #Democrats can get a majority in #Congress and stonewall #Trump

If that doesn't happen (which would be a serious tragedy), then 4 years. And if we get a #MAGA/ Trump president in 2029, write off this country for a generation at least

All of that, with the additional caveat of watching out for whether we even •have• real elections in 2028, or even 2026.
in reply to Ben Royce 🇺🇦

My own sense in this is nobody should travel to the United States if they can possibly avoid it until billionaires disappear as an economic class.

We won’t get out of the black hole we are in until they are dealt with.

This is why it is absolutely necessary to avoid all large corporations as much as possible to walk away in every way we can from any economic involvement with them as monumentally impossible as that sounds.

another day, another binary file format with a badly designed magic number

not gonna call it out specifically but here are some RFC2113 MUSTs for magic number design:

MUST be the very first N bytes in the file
MUST be at least four bytes long, eight is better
MUST include at least one byte with the high bit set
MUST include a byte sequence that is invalid UTF-8
SHOULD include a zero byte, but you can usually get away with having that be part of the overall version number that immediately follows the magic number (did I mention that you really SHOULD put an overall version number right after the magic number, unless you know and have documented exactly why it's not necessary, e.g. PNG?)

good examples:

  • PNG
  • ELF

bad examples:

  • GIF
  • PE
  • PDF
