#Mastodon is taking off! But Internet history provides numerous examples of other promising platforms for the digital public sphere that have died untimely deaths (remember Second Life?).

@rwg and @aram, who have reviewed the history and looked at the challenges, and still bullish on the #Fediverse.

Do you think Mastodon will have staying power? theconversation.com/the-fedive…

in reply to The Conversation U.S.

🤫 more than Mastodon or Pixelfed...
I'm still thinking about whether there could be a Fediverse where, for example, controversial (state) representatives would be read at all..? On which additional levels would journalists have to move in order to still see the controversial things despite being hidden or blocked?
Even if I feel extremely comfortable here (would like to read more science here) - some aspects of the former Twitter may be difficult to implement...
in reply to The Conversation U.S.

My Mastodon instance need no external funding. It thus has provably more staying power than any commercially funded service.

Popular program to promote women becoming aerospace engineers is at risk

My niece is an aerospace engineer. She's gone from working on one of the the SLS engine stages to now managing a DoD project that's recently been in the news. She's received the Army's top civilian employee award. Without her, both projects would have been far longer in development.

Also, that seems to illustrate timesharing, not multiprocessing. Multiprocessing would probably be a single handle attached to multiple cups.

Last time I had an exit interview (not with McDonald's) the HR lady asked why I was leaving, listened what I had to say, and replied, with a sigh "that's what everyone is saying at the moment.". So HR knew what was wrong, so they must have told management, and management had decided they were happy with the resulting loss of staff.

people have been domesticating themselves for receptiveness to reward and away from violence since the invention of civilization, so I can see how being more sensitive to reward can create a feed(ing)back loop

@raven667 “domesticating ourselves” is sort of a pernicious way to say that societies continue to exist because they work better than the alternative.

Because of tariffs and recession fears, Americans are more likely to buy a sedan instead of a pricey SUV or truck.

But Detroit doesn’t offer any sedans. Foreign automakers do.

The fate of Ukraine is being played out in the trenches, but it also depends on those in the United States who want to defend democracy, and here on our ability to unite Europeans, to find the means for their common defense, and to make Europe the power that it once was in history and that it hesitates to become again.

Our parents defeated fascism and communism at great cost.

The task of our generation is to defeat the totalitarianisms of the 21st century.
