I'm debugging the ROM emulation on the Firestarter. It looks as if the code to monitor ROM enable and ROM selection is working but the host crashes once it starts accessing the ROM.
The first access of the ROM is when BASIC calls KL_INIT_BACK to initialise background ROMs.
The first read is the LD A,(&C000). A few cycles later the ROM's init routine at &C006 will be called.
This is the trace of the first ROMDIS assertion (by the Firestarter). The first instruction looks like the LD A,(&C000): opcode read, RFSH asserted, then two reads of the immediate address, then a read of the emulated ROM. ROMEN is asserted because we're in the lower ROM but the previous instruction was the return from the call to HI_KL_ROM_SELECT which is in RAM, so no ROMEN. Looks like we have the correct code here.
A few instructions later is the call into the ROM's init routine. The CALL is the instruction prior to the ROMDIS on the trace. Here we see: opcode read; refresh; two reads of target address; two pushes of program counter (into RAM so no ROMEN). The ROMDIS is the read of the next opcode from the emulated ROM.
This all looks correct, although ROMDIS might be getting asserted a little too late.
Swapping the instruction at &C006 - the first one executed from ROM to a HALT, and tracing the HALT signal: success!. It's clearly reading and executing the HALT correctly.
Reworking the code to use polling instead of interrupts: and the ROM is now running cleanly. I think that pretty much confirms it as a timing issue (due to the interrupt dispatch overhead on the Pico).
I have some ideas for a faster and more flexible memory emulation system but I’m tempted to get other things working first.

Examine the script to determine if it is malicious or flawed and then invoke it only if I find it acceptable. This is pretty standard among experienced users.
Decades ago someone might have been trusting enough to curl and invoke a script without examining it from unknown sources though that is not an acceptable practice today. Though some sites may still offer this as an install method. Most experienced users, especially devs, are going to examine the script before they run it on their system. The more paranoid are going to check it out first in a sandbox before installing it to a live system. I have a VM especially for this type of testing.
And they probably do not know how to open a terminal to use the command either. Though, as I stated, I was referring to experienced users. Newbies on any system are bound to get themselves into trouble. That is a given.

Its taken me over three years (!), but I finally sorted out some calibration and verification for a DIY pyranometer (solar irradiance) sensor I've been designing. With my simple test rig I found out the sensors have about +/-10% output variation (the datasheet says 11%, so quite close). But if you need relative irradiance data or can cope with about 10% variation from absolute then this DIY sensor will work out of the box! If you can calibrate it then it can be even better.
