Oh no! I hate when that happens…. I let the car get away with one of these. Second one — and it gets replaced!
in reply to JohnOCFII

@JohnOCFII It's got over 200,000 miles, but I was just remarking how well it was running, no extra lights on the dash, drives nice ... and then ugh. It's nice to have a parts runner, and a dogs hauler if we can keep it going for a while longer. Probably "just" an alternator ...

I used to grow broccoli that'd go to really similar looking flowers* and pollinators loved them. If I cooked the broccoli when it'd partially gone to flower, it was awesome.

Just came back from grocery shopping here in Toronto and this is consistent with my observations. Lots of USA products marked down and just sitting there rotting. Plenty of Canadian, Mexican and European alternatives available.

OK, it's time for the seed inventory: which are still viable, and which need to be replenished?

Nightshade seedlings start today above a heat mat. I'm planning

  1. Sweetie cherry tomatoes
  2. Mid-sized yellow tomatoes
  3. Some kind of large heirloom tomato (I'll see what's available at Home Hardware 🍁 )
  4. Black Beauty eggplants
  5. California Wonder bell peppers
  6. Italian finger peppers (from seeds I've saved myself)

in reply to David Megginson

Last fall I picked up a bunch of acorns on my hikes and scattered them around the junky areas of our land. I don't know if any of those seeds were viable and if so any of them survived the winter, but I'm trying to get rid of a bunch of buckthorn and encourage other stuff to grow. I'm hoping to find a bunch of maple helicopters this spring and sprinkle them as well in the same areas.

This administration illegally denied hundreds of people due process, then deported them to a country they’ve never known, run by an authoritarian infamous for cruel treatment of prisoners. They then deceived a federal judge to buy time for the planes to land so he couldn’t do anything about it.

Yesterday, Ukraine destroyed the bridge over the Konka river using a French 340 kg AASM Hammer missile.

This bridge is essential for Russia’s logistics in the occupied part of Kherson Oblast, and Russia will now find it more difficult to bring supplies to troops between the Konka river and the larger Dnipro river.

I did a search for something, found no definitive answer, so I wrote up a blog post that has the definitive answer (well, it worked for me) so that in the future others do not need to suffer as I have suffered...

This, to me, highlights what blogs can do. They can share your own personal experience that might help others.

My blog has been running since 1997. How many forums and web sites have disappeared since then? With valuable information lost...

I don't serve up ads or even track the stats of my site, I just write to help myself and hopefully others.

To me that can be enough of a reason...

We can't trust media or corporations or the govt to publish things we want to know.

It's up to us!

"We can't trust media or corporations or the govt to publish things we want to know."

I think I meant to say that We can't trust media or corporations or the govt to make available the knowledge we want and need.

My little web site has outlasted media empires who crumbled and got deleted when the ROI wasn't there, or some corporate monster decided to kill some service.

in reply to Pete Prodoehl 🍕

We the people have to rely on we the people. Build community online, keep writing, keep sharing, never give up.

Archive, make copies, share links, don't put all your posts in one basket. Syndicate, make more backups, keep some offline.

We can win by not allowing our history to be erased.

in reply to Pete Prodoehl 🍕

that's a great reason enough! I've been thinking how best to interact with friends and customers recently, and still working on that, but it feels less right to be using those other platforms. It's nicer to share the things with people who actually care, like in personal group messages etc, and like you're saying - a website with a blog is a nice way to putting thoughts and information out there! Sorry, bit of a ramble!
in reply to ODM

@odmac Honestly if one person finds a post I wrote useful, that's great... and sometimes that one person is me!

But if someone posts about something and I can point them to a blog post with my own experience, I feel like I am actually helping the world.

"Despite all (the right's) absurdist posturing, they struggle to come to terms with a contradictory world that does not conform to their pre-decided categories. They want to assert, simultaneously, that unambiguous laws govern all aspects of being, while acting as though ‘truth’ is whatever they want or need it to be at any given moment.
in reply to Sue is Walking the Earth 🌱

"Calling them weird absolutely works, and telling them their sole artistic output looks like shit also works. Laughing at people who treat AI art as in any way legitimate works. Talking about AI’s environmental impact or its implications for the workforce will not work—they like that, it makes them feel dangerous. Instead of talking about taking money from artists, talk about how it makes them look cheap. If hurting &offending people is part of the point, then we can take that fun away"

Great stuff! A thorough step-by-step guide for setting up a #chatmail server from @nerdvm
includes also considerations regarding firewall, setting up of ssh and some topics left out of the current main setup guide.

Note that even on a very small server you can easily host 10Ks of active chatmail addresses so if you succeed setting up a server don't be shy letting others know the domain 😀

US state medium Voice of America has been transmitting radio news internationally since 1942, but Trump thinks they are “corrupt” and “illegal” and pulls the plug, sending 1300 employees on administrative leave.

83 years of US history gone overnight… because Trump felt like it.

Now Putin can finally get the international airwaves to himself and his propaganda news network RT.

exactly. It's impossible not to see the hand of #Putin behind this when you know how influencial #VOA and Radio Free Europe were in the #coldwar era, and continued to play a role in Eastern Europe as Putin sought to revive the #USSR/the Russian empire/both.

I have a dumb question or I may be bit data nerd, I will check Admin Docs.

How can I monitor how many new users joining in particular mastodon servers? I don’t own a server as of now. But I am thinking of hosting one. Can I export such data to my dashboard like Grafana for the servers I own and don’t own through any open API?
