My confidence has risen during my transition mostly in line with how passing Iāve felt, but takes a hit when Iām worried a stranger has clocked me (which can be triggered as easily as someone looking at me for slightly too long). I know this is something I need to work on, so today I embraced visibility and marched with a trans flag at Pride for the first time.
Later on, while I was queuing at one of the food stalls, a middle-aged woman came up to me and said āYou look really cuteā.
While I was walking home, a group of guys walking the other way serenaded me with āMysterious Girlā. I wasnāt sure how to interpret that.

One of my kids wants to see if there is any truth in the old phrase that #Norwich has a #church for every week and a #pub for every dayā¦
They are keen to see the churches, Iām more curious about the pubs!
Ecclesiastical architecture won todayā¦must have looked at 15 places of worship in the space of an hour and a half! Most were shut or used for different purposesā¦thatās been the case for decades. I donāt feel sad, because Iām not religious - but churches are part of our city street scene.
To my untrained eye, one medieval church looks much like the next I have to confessā¦I like details like clocks, sundials and round towers that differentiate them!
But the oddest church we came across was St Mary the Less on Queen St. Itās bricked up and virtually walled in on all sides. But it has an intriguing link back to the #Strangers - the #Dutch people who came to #Norwich because of their weaving skills and gave us the cityās emblem - the canary!
Today we found Strangerās gate openā¦
It's definitely an eccentric church. I visited in 2010 and got a tour from the owner. At the time it was a very dusty, privately owned Dutch study centre, and the church was in need of repair.
If you're curious / want to visit, you probably get a response from the owner if you post a hand-written letter under the door!
Intriguing! When you say āDutch study centreāā¦I came across this account:
āWhen I first visited here in the mid-1990s, the church had just been sold by the same trust which, amazingly, had been formed in 1832 to convey ownership of the lease to the Swedenborgians. The building was bought by a curious organisation which proclaimed itself the Dutch and Flemish studies centreā
Thanks for sharing the photos! The handwritten quirkiness of all the signs now totally makes sense. Did you manage to get the Dutch language classes take off elsewhere in Norwich?
No, unfortunately not. This was after Norfolk Adult Education had scrapped a Dutch for Beginners course I had organised. There were a handful of learners who wanted to continue but it didn't work out.
I think the Merchant House nowadays has informal language meetups for people learning French and German. Something like that would have been perfect.
Thatās a real shame. I donāt understand why Norwich doesnāt do more to encourage Dutch connections and language learning given our history and the fact that Dutch is apparently one of the closest and easiest languages to learn if you speak English.
A yet at large suspect shot two Minnesota state lawmakers along with their spouses.
The suspect killed Rep Melissa Hortman and her husband. He shot Sen. John Hoffman and his wifeāthey are hospitalized.
It appears the suspect is dressed to impersonate law enforcement. My deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones.
Yāall please be safe out there today. Travel in groups and have a plan to meet up at an agreed upon time and place.

in reply to Neil Brown • • •I am a tad divided on this.
What makes sense is an industry such that around half the people that could be in the panel are female. And then that half the panel are female.
But if 95% of people that could be on the panel are male? Ensuring one is female is distorting things, assuming a small panel.
What needs fixing in such cases is why is the split of those that could be on the panel skewed?
Maybe distorting things in such cases helps that in the long term?
Brett Sheffield (he/him)
in reply to RevK • • •@revk It's may be distorting things but it's worth it.
Women and girls need to see female role models - it's part of how we fix the industry long term. Unfortunately that means setting quotas now, so that hopefully one day we won't need them.
Light
in reply to Brett Sheffield (he/him) • • •a) Why do gender ratios need "fixing"?
b) Why does seeing people of your sex on panels fix that? If you're interested in it, you're interested in it. Representation be damned!
@revk @neil
Neil Brown
in reply to Light • • •@light @dentangle @revk
> Why does seeing people of your sex on panels fix that?
Not a fix - that requires far more structural changes, generally - but a step in the right direction, if it helps a broader, more diverse, group of people think "yeah, I can do this!"

I want people who are not middle-aged, cis, white men like me to think "Yeah, I can do this too".
They are more likely to think that if they see people more like them on panel.
I don't see this as particularly controversial or surprising, and I can't see a good reason why someone would *not* support it.
Light
in reply to Neil Brown • • •Tony Hoyle
in reply to Light • • •@light @dentangle @revk That's a very privileged position to take.
Lots of people would love to just see themselves just as people with certain interests. Society won't let them. It reminds them every day that they're not one of the CIS White majority. They have to go above and beyond to prove themselves constantly.
