USGS Tectonic summary:
The July 29, 2025, M8.8 earthquake east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, occurred as the result of shallow reverse faulting. At the location of this earthquake, the Pacific plate is moving west-northwest with respect to the North America plate at about 77 mm/yr. Note, the North American plate extends westward beyond the North American continent. The earthquake’s location and sense of motion is consistent with faulting on the subduction zone plate interface of the Kuril-Kamchatka Arc.

Reverse faulting events of the size of the July 29, 2025, earthquake are typically about 390 km by 140 km in size (length x width).

Picture 1 is Normal fault.
Normal faults can be observed in various geological settings, such as rift zones and areas undergoing tectonic stretching.

often associated with convergent plate boundaries. (this is the case for July 29/30 earthquake)

These faults are commonly found along transform plate boundaries, such as the San Andreas Fault in California.

The beach ball is a very interesting relatively young product. Done by measuring propagation of early P wave (first shock) and later S waves.

I this one, the lines are eather from sout-west to north-east, alomost equatorial) or from north east over pole down to south west.

Om the context of the plate boundaries, the south-west to north east is the most likely. Being a reverse fault, it means pacific plate rose up against the eurasian plate/north american plae, so a wave would more likely be directed either/both towards north west and south east. So this woudl explain Japan getting minimal wave as the ground movement would ot have pushed the waves towards it.

A tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the state of hawaii. Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property.

A tsunami is a series of long ocean waves. Each individual wave crest can last 5 to 15 minutes or more and extensively flood coastal areas. The danger can continue for many hours after the initial wave as subsequent waves arrive.

Tsunami wave heights cannot be predicted and the first wave may not be the largest. Tsunami waves efficiently wrap around islands. All shores are at risk no matter which direction they face. The trough of a tsunami wave may temporarily expose the seafloor but the area will quickly flood again. Extremely strong and unusual nearshore currents can accompany a tsunami. Debris picked up and carried by a tsunami amplifies its destructive power. Simultaneous high tides or high surf can significantly increase the tsunami hazard.

This is not just water rising by that amount, it is also a huge amount of water being pushed in your direction, so that wave may actually rise much higher when it reached the beach and wash out a lot of stuff.

Mr Google only knows of a high school in Vancouver but Natural Resources Canada pointed me an island at northern enf of Queen Charlotte islands west of Pince Rupert.
