It is the only way to learn. One must be willing to discard an old theory when new evidence refutes it. Many can not.

Took my first dose of metformin a little while ago. Is it normal to get a "head change" from it? I feel a little lightheaded & scatter-brained. But also in a weirdly positive and maybe even perky mood.

Right there with you. I’ve got a CPAP. Instead of that, my wife is sleeping with one of these mouth pieces that apparently shifts your jaw. (she just snored. I was diagnosed with apnea). So we are quite the pair when we go to bed. She looks like she’s about to step into a boxing ring and I look like I’m going deep sea diving. But we both sleep better, so there’s that.

@paco LOL Yeah I make jokes about being a Snork with the new head gear. But it's way better than stopping breathing all night to the point that my wife stays up to make sure I don't die!

Thank you that’s very enlightening. So there are two possible forces. Individuals in Argentina, desperately needing dollars and probably needing a lot more of them because the US dollar is sliding in value.

Maybe it’s a lot easier for the cartels to launder their dollars because they need to deal in a larger volume..

in reply to GhostOnTheHalfShell

@GhostOnTheHalfShell the US dollar might be sliding in value but inflation in argentina hit something like 300% a few months ago so it's not really comparable. they love dollars.

also just to clarify, i haven't seen good information about how this works w/argentinian pesos, but the tripartite money laundry between china -> mexican cartels -> american consumers is extremely well documented. i've also seen some information on how this works in the european context w/the italian mafia and dubai cartels,

i have trouble believing that it doesn't work the same way in argentina.

in reply to ⚯ Michel de Cryptadamus ⚯

That’s news to me. The last I looked at the situation in Argentina the inflation had leveled off some, but I think what you’re saying is it’s gone back up again.

I wouldn’t doubt this is because the peso has collapsed. Argentina has depleted its foreign reserves, trying to prop it up.

in reply to GhostOnTheHalfShell

@GhostOnTheHalfShell i haven't been following it but from what i do know you are right, it had leveled off recently but it did an enormous spike when milei came in and stopped supporting the currency. i heard it went from ~70-100% per year to ~300%+ basically overnight, then milei stepped in and supported it again and then it died back down.

but it "died back down" to 47% (i just checked), which is unthinkable hyperinflation to those of us with stabler currencies.

in reply to ⚯ Michel de Cryptadamus ⚯

Because I’ve looked into the topic hyperinflation with respect to the Weimar republic.. 50% or so per year I think would not technically be called hyperinflation. For most people I think it’s distinction without a difference.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperinf…

in reply to GhostOnTheHalfShell

@GhostOnTheHalfShell yeah i dunno where i'd draw the line for "hyperinflation" vs. regular "really bad inflation", maybe around 100% per year or something. but like you said, kind of a distinction w/out a difference. at a certain point you just automatically start trying to move all your money to a stabler currency, and that point is probably lower than 47%.

p.s. turkey has been struggling w/around 70% inflation and USDT is also popular there, but they have no capital controls so they can also just buy dollars.

p.p.s. a serbian friend of mine once said "i lived through a war and i lived through #hyperinflation and to be honest i preferred the war"

in reply to ⚯ Michel de Cryptadamus ⚯

Yes, I recall news reports on the monetary situation of Turkey. Erdogan has shall we say some rather unique theories about money and they were tested…. It didn’t work out well.
in reply to ⚯ Michel de Cryptadamus ⚯

The wiki link states that 50% inflation per month is the definition of hyper inflation.. in my attitude is that’s nuts
in reply to GhostOnTheHalfShell

@GhostOnTheHalfShell i think the difference between hyperinflation and bad inflation is that in hyperinflation you literally sprint to the money changer w/your paycheck because every hour counts, whereas really bad inflation you can wait til monday.
in reply to ⚯ Michel de Cryptadamus ⚯

The horror stories from the Weimar Republic involve people with wheel barrels of money.

Men would sprint home to deliver their paychecks to their wives, who would then sprint to the store to purchase things before the money became useless.

It’s hard to comprehend just how bad that episode was. The Smithsonian actually has an article on what happened.

in reply to GhostOnTheHalfShell

People starved to death in Berlin. Mobs of armed men pillaged farms for crops and cattle. People would also mob ships arriving at port for basic food stuff like butter, flour, sugar, and pork. Individuals lost everything and social order completely collapsed.

Frankly, I think it was a miracle there was not a major revolution in 1923 although Adolf tried to overthrow the Bavarian government and failed.

in reply to ⚯ Michel de Cryptadamus ⚯

@GhostOnTheHalfShell a lot of reporting i've seen in WSJ and other places at least suggests that Argentina is probably tether's biggest legitimate-ish market. unfortunately no one brings any numbers and the argentinians are all trading on chinese exchanges so it's all very opaque (and trust me i have tried).

but that's what the reporting suggests.

in reply to ⚯ Michel de Cryptadamus ⚯

@GhostOnTheHalfShell Vice had a good video on the way the 3 way money laundry works (china/mexico/USA) that has some animations:

vicetv.com/en_us/video/making-…

it's complicated and tbh it took me watching this and various similar videos from FT etc. to fully grok how it works. but if you're interested the animations and diagrams in the vice piece are the best i've seen.

in reply to ⚯ Michel de Cryptadamus ⚯

@GhostOnTheHalfShell capital controls in argentina, however, mean that they can't legally buy very many dollars.

this is where crypto as end run around the legal system comes in.

i'm somewhat sympathetic to argentinians who buy tether, tbh. i just hope they don't get rug pulled.

in reply to ⚯ Michel de Cryptadamus ⚯

That is somewhat ironic, Miele’s relationship to Silicon Valley billionaires and own indulgence in crypto.

Here he is trying to save the peso and it’s being obliterated by the libertarian instrument of evading regulation.

Just a bit ironic I think

in reply to ⚯ Michel de Cryptadamus ⚯

The only problem with libertarianism is pretty soon you have to lean on a billionaire sugar daddy.

Whatever happened to him morale, hazard, and consequences?
