i still do that by the way, like it's still my job and i still have lots of thoughts & opinions about the field as a whole, where it's going, and what we can learn from its ~150 year history. but i did come to the realization this year that research isn't the main thing in my life any more. it's still important to me that i get to do this work, because nothing else in my life has been quite as intellectually satisfying; but if i had to choose between continuing to be a scientist and continuing to be a woman, i know which i'd pick. i just hope it never comes to a decision like that.
