gnome 47 is so beautiful with the new accent color thing
in reply to jade

@jade It is funny, when Gnome was initially released in 1999 as an Open Source Alternative to KDE (which had just released in 1998) I was not impressed. It was lack luster and was missing a lot of features that I thought I wanted. Later on I decided that having all those features I never used was not so great. I have been using Gnome as my preferred Desktop Environment for decades now. I have tried many others and really am not impressed. I am not likely to change DE anytime soon.

A few weeks back I was complaining about this meme and we had a good discussion about it on here. I ended up making a lesson plan about taxes and my students really liked it so I will share it. (It is for students with a basic understanding of integration. But, you could probably rework it to skip that bit.)

Speaking as a person who has filed her own (complicated) taxes for years, your tax lesson is brilliant! You make understanding the US tax tables and tax system very clear. The lesson also answers the question, “Why do I need to learn math?”.

@gizmomathboy

When I was in the sixth grade (the 70’s) I literally had to take a class called “life skills”.

It was a year long course but you rotated every six weeks to a new “skill” class.

Examples: Home ec, finance, small engine repair, health, etc…

And, naturally… since “it was good enough for us”…

Well, actually, I think something like that really should be done these days.

(In this case it could be covered in the finance section)

“What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance.”

Try posting lots of photos of Ukranian churches. I've found MAGA don't know anything about the history of Christianity in Ukraine (or elsewhere.)

This afternoon, Juno was on the storm kitchen door, longingly looking outside from the window. He knows it’s still frigid outside. If he really wants to go outside, there’s enough of a gap in one corner between the door and the frame.

I offered a ride (a plastic measuring cup), he hopped on inside, back to the lemon tree in the kitchen where he lives.

This cute jumping spider jumped on my ankle while I was standing on the kitchen doorstep outside, looking down at the potted plants that were outside for some sun. I’m pretty sure this is Juno, saying hello. 🤗🥰🕷️✨

I have never been more ashamed to be an American.
in reply to Jennifer

@Jennifer I Have never been proud or ashamed of an accident of birth. I did not chose nor have any influence in being America. Nationalism is just another form of prejudice.

I am proud of the fact that I voted against what is transpiring today in America. That I did everything I could do to avoid it. It is unfortunate that I failed; though I did what I could reasonably do.

If you also have done what you could then you have no reason to be embarrassed. You did the right thing. We are not responsible for the rash and irresponsible behavior of others. Even if we must live with their mistakes.

We can get through these four years together. Stay strong.

#Today 28

Good day!

This is, literally, my view.

The place where I’m babysitting a handful of animals (Evie the Cat is here). Where my car battery died after 10-years.

I’ve setup collaborative hikes & my writing journal for March. Next, notes on the sequel to Deadly Stroll, which is Exhumed Reflection.

Be everwell.

So the good news is that it's Friday.

The bad news is that Doug Ford and his conservatives won another majority and will be in complete control for the next 4 years here in Ontario.

Cheap booze, weed shops on every corner.

A depleted public health and education system. Private care that only the wealthy have access to.

All while his buds get rich and the divide between the middle and upper class widens.

The people of Ontario are stupid. We get what we deserve.

Between

As the light erupts across the sky
your morning has just begun
as cries of avow are birthed
I sing to you my little one...
'tis not at this extreme
'tis between

You can endure no more of this abundance
Your girths limit has been reached
Ill content and miserable
I say to you my child...
'tis not at this extreme
'tis between

Your barren face has lost its color
You are barely there at all
starving and desperate
I reason with you...
'tis not at this extreme
'tis between

Not a thought for anything else can be
she is all that you will see
obsession overcomes thee
Will you hear my plea...
'tis not at this extreme
'tis between

Her softest touch has torn your heart apart
madness grips you to your core
grief has manifest rage
listen to my screams
'tis not at this extreme
'tis between

As the light dims across the sky
your twilight finally arrives
as sorrow finds its rest
I utter my last goodbye...
'tis not at this extreme
'tis between

Server Update

I have managed to fine tune my instance for now. Though I will have to see how it handles heavier loads when new users signup. For now the logs only show anticipated issues. Such as graphics that are shared that are not to encoded to the standard and thus throw exceptions. I would rather those exceptions be handled though for now it is not a big deal as it does not affect the server performance.

I am still learning the Friendica codebase so it will be sometime before I can work out issues such as these. And there are far more pressing issues.

Interesting, apparently all those tariffs are expected to cause significant increases in the cost of beer.

"..Beyond malt, hops, yeast and water, aluminum is a key ingredient in the manufacturing process, used to make the cans for most of the craft beer sold at retail.... For the craft beer industry, which depends heavily on aluminum cans from Canada, the 25% increase will hit hard.... For us, in packaging, it’s probably the most expensive part of what’s in a six-pack... A typical Spiteful six-pack sells for $11.99 on store shelves, Klein said. He expects the retail price to go up at least $1 per six-pack after the tariff hits...."

in reply to AI6YR Ben

Oh fasten your seat belts, because we're going to hit back with tariffs of our own, and TFP promises to escalate if we do, so that Aluminum tariff is going to go to 30%, 35%, 50%... whatever dumb number the moron thinks will do the trick, and when he does, we'll increase and/or expand our tariffs, so get ready for $18 six packs.

Oh, and $10/gal gas.

in reply to AI6YR Ben

I guess it's time for a re-popularization of refillable, returnable glass bottles over the disposable bottles.

Does it federate though?

revolt.chat/ is also an open source Discord clone, but doesn't federate, so you end up with a single super server anyway, so the open source and self-hostable part becomes rather moot.

in reply to Emil Jacobs - Collectifission

@collectifission
Why do you think you would end up with a single super server? It is enough when the client can connect to multiple servers at once. Your chats would be on your servers, and mine on mine, and each of our clients would connect to both.

Why would you even want to federate a chat server? It only complicates things – you do no longer have an authoritative timeline, and you invite spam the way Google Hangouts died in spam before it defederated random Jabber servers.

in reply to Kris

@isotopp "It is enough when the client can connect to multiple servers at once."

That really would be enough, agreed. That's really all I meant: use 1 account (registered on whatever server) to connect to everyone else.

One more time: if you want your data safe, secure and available in two places DO NOT USE CLOUD SERVICES.

'Cloud service' = 'exposed to the eyes of the guy who runs your cloud server'.

Use Syncthing. Opensource. Free. Bomb-proof. syncthing.net/

Unless you're an iphone person, because iOS wants to keep you locked into -ahem 'incentivized'- to pay for iCloud.
