The Billionaire Class Is a Threat to Democracy
Since the pandemic began, America’s billionaires have seen their wealth skyrocket to an amount almost equal to a fifth of US GDP. This concentration of wealth is morally unacceptable — but it also represents a mortal threat to democracy.jacobin.com

Question/ask!
Some locals are organizing a community skillshare and I offered to help folks get set up with secure text messaging using Signal. Are there any tutorials/guides that you particularly recommend, or known issues with setup, maybe with other kinds of phones? (I've had no issues setting up on Android)
Also: is there anything else you'd recommend I share with folks in terms of communication security? Other helpful apps or tools? Looking for things I can quickly learn, then teach.
lools like the signal suggestions are covered.
github.com/Gedsh/InviZible is an excellent privacy tool, only for android.
@torproject browser is both ios and droid, and should be on every phone.
@getgrid is a cross platform privacy focused live location sharing app. It's under heavy development(maybe alpha/beta) and doesn't always work me.
There's a lot of "more advanced" privacy projects, but these are all ones you could learn easily and teach quickly.
If you want more ideas...

That's not a giant meteor. It's SPHEREx and PUNCH, two @nasa missions, being sent up into space via a Falcon 9 @spacex rocket!! SPHEREx is a mission that'll survey over 450 million galaxies to uncover the history of the universe and how it evolved. The PUNCH mission will study the outer atmosphere of the sun.
I am VERY EXCITED about SPHEREx and what it'll find about the period of cosmic inflation, a period when the universe grew by ~10³⁰ in size in a tiny fraction of a second!

#WritersCoffeeClub for March 12:
Happy Plant a Flower Day! What role does nature take in your stories?
Depends where we're going. If we're talking about The Voyageur, it's a key theme. If we're looking at something set in the Jovian Lunar Empire, it couldn't matter less.
In general, when nature does show up it tends to be aberrant from the actual condition. The bigger role nature plays in my stories is the role it plays in my creative process; the way the seasons govern my ratio of indoor to outdoor activity, the way the best ideas come to me directly from the sun, as filtered down through elm-leaves on my favourite trail down by the river.
To All USians who are angry when Canadians push back at your "just joking" about joining or annexing Canada, or when you say, "Invasion of Canada will never happen" think about this...
Obviously we are not the only country to feel justified with defending ourselves because NATO military chiefs had a closed door security summit in Paris and the US was not invited. Japan and Australia were there.

in reply to Dan ⁂ • • •i run some ~1.5 billion+ requests on a colorful mix of TS, JS, Go, Rust across serverless, vm, k8s.
of course we could gain <insert any metric here> rewriting some services to <insert hype language here>, but we’d 100% loose some flexibility and momentum.
you can always argue for any language and unless you're at the very highest end of the chain critical performance like with rust becomes a must. our scale isn't even remotely near that.
but again, every team usually has their reasons 😉
Dan ⁂
in reply to Dan ⁂ • • •however, that's not the hall pass to never change anything.
sunk cost fallacy is a real thing 🙃

in reply to Dan ⁂ • • •I started with C (because of low level HW I've programmed that time), than moved to C++, than done almost anything from Python, JS, PHP some Java.
Programming language is just way to achieve something, real development is in algorithmization and connecting different interfaces. (I would say)
I am not saying you doing it wrong (far from it, just being curious), but how do you keep everything runing?
When some framework is updated sometimes something broke.
When you have to keep track of 3-4 frameworks / lot of libraries / run environments, it might get messy quite fast.
So you keep everything on some version and upgrade with new version of your application or you just update environment and hope nothing will break?
Admiral Snackbär
in reply to FandaSin • • •@FandaSin
Usually a mixture of automated updates+tests using renovate/dependabot, occasional upgrade tasks in Jira, and simply instant-legacy approach.
A ton of software in the real world is just horribly outdated and insecure. I'm currently working on a project that was started in 2018 with a postgres version EOL in 2016 or so and the entire stack was never updated. It's a fixed price contract, no budget for updates. Sad, but normal.
FandaSin

Thanks for answer, really just being curious.👍
Never heard "instant legacy SW", but I know exactly what you mean.🤦
"It's a fixed price contract, no budget for updates. Sad, but normal."
Sadly, I am programming for about 2 decades and I KNOW EXACTLY what you mean by that.🤬
It's better if you just have to give them product and never look back on it, but if you have to keep that code working with occasional change, yeah, that's best way to lunatic asylum.

Not only keeping it updated, but figuring out the requirements alone is absolute insanity.
Large orgs develop so much internal data lore, it's almost impossible to cover everything.
Often enough, the initial draft and the final product have next to nothing in common.
Dan ⁂
in reply to Admiral Snackbär • • •@AdmSnackbar @FandaSin fully agree. we have the near-luxury to be a fairly self-sustained team inside a large org. we therefore created our own set of principles (public here github.com/swrlab/swrlab/blob/…) which also include a section à la “if it's not maintained any more, we'll turn it off”.
We use dependabot on github and speedy ci/cd processes to quickly update and deploy things without too much overhead. this really helps keeping things rather up-to-date and secure (so far)
