that whole #typescript #golang rewrite discussion here and on other networks is kinda funny 🤡

i mean, let people use the language they want??

the “yOu ShOuLd HaVe UsEd #RuSt" gang is strong, but it’s far from perfect and you can literally use almost anything to run almost anything on almost anything

often times (not always!) people have put some decent thought behind their decisions 💡

reminds me of one of my favorite quotes:

“Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don't.”

in reply to FandaSin

@FandaSin
Not only keeping it updated, but figuring out the requirements alone is absolute insanity.

Large orgs develop so much internal data lore, it's almost impossible to cover everything.

Often enough, the initial draft and the final product have next to nothing in common.

in reply to Admiral Snackbär

@AdmSnackbar @FandaSin fully agree. we have the near-luxury to be a fairly self-sustained team inside a large org. we therefore created our own set of principles (public here github.com/swrlab/swrlab/blob/…) which also include a section à la “if it's not maintained any more, we'll turn it off”.

We use dependabot on github and speedy ci/cd processes to quickly update and deploy things without too much overhead. this really helps keeping things rather up-to-date and secure (so far)

Hey @Tamasg I heard about the new orbit players. Wonder whet TTS they're gonna use? My guess is probably acapela or vocalizer. Or maybe even just ESpeak.
in reply to patricus

they can't use Eloquence either, but people are hoping you can sideload.

Does a basic media player need an octa-core processor in 2025?
Will it be any less pricy than the competition?
People do die on the hill of their preferred audiobook player, I suppose.

in reply to Sean Randall

Well, octa-core may just help with feed processing mainly, if this has a podcast b rowser as well. My guess is it'll be something low-end like ARM-A53 or 55 based, not a high-end Arm-X1 core or like in flagship phones. I see they license runaTTS in their Orbit Speak though, which interestingly is the same licensee as used by Tifloteknia for their Vocalizer for NVDA product. Another thing that tells me Nuance charges out the butt for a license, so much so that these companies are just getting theirs from one common distribitor and paying them rights to use it.

@Mojeek Hello. Can you guys allow adding custom Search Choices? Thanks.

Wrote and deleted several passive-aggressive email responses to an 'urgent' project request (minutes).

Ended up going with "Got it! No problem!"

I can relate. I’ve typed out responses I could never send, then had to take a moment before coming back to write the calm email instead. 😂

Question/ask!

Some locals are organizing a community skillshare and I offered to help folks get set up with secure text messaging using Signal. Are there any tutorials/guides that you particularly recommend, or known issues with setup, maybe with other kinds of phones? (I've had no issues setting up on Android)

Also: is there anything else you'd recommend I share with folks in terms of communication security? Other helpful apps or tools? Looking for things I can quickly learn, then teach.

in reply to Shauna GM

lools like the signal suggestions are covered.

github.com/Gedsh/InviZible is an excellent privacy tool, only for android.

@torproject browser is both ios and droid, and should be on every phone.

@getgrid is a cross platform privacy focused live location sharing app. It's under heavy development(maybe alpha/beta) and doesn't always work me.

There's a lot of "more advanced" privacy projects, but these are all ones you could learn easily and teach quickly.

If you want more ideas...

That's not a giant meteor. It's SPHEREx and PUNCH, two @nasa missions, being sent up into space via a Falcon 9 @spacex rocket!! SPHEREx is a mission that'll survey over 450 million galaxies to uncover the history of the universe and how it evolved. The PUNCH mission will study the outer atmosphere of the sun.

I am VERY EXCITED about SPHEREx and what it'll find about the period of cosmic inflation, a period when the universe grew by ~10³⁰ in size in a tiny fraction of a second!

Brothers and sisters, I invite you to join me in observing a meaningful Ember Wednesday. (Ask claude.ai about it.) The sun will be up soon where I am. I’m beginning now cradleofprayer.org/this-weeks-…, later msg me t.me/tbc00

A Health System Is Fighting Idaho’s Abortion Ban. It’s Not Its First Controversial Stance.

St. Luke’s, Idaho’s largest health system, was outspoken in defending its staff during a backlash against masks and vaccines. It also sued right-wing figure Ammon Bundy — and won. Now it’s backing its doctors on the abortion front.

#WritersCoffeeClub for March 12:

Happy Plant a Flower Day! What role does nature take in your stories?

Depends where we're going. If we're talking about The Voyageur, it's a key theme. If we're looking at something set in the Jovian Lunar Empire, it couldn't matter less.

In general, when nature does show up it tends to be aberrant from the actual condition. The bigger role nature plays in my stories is the role it plays in my creative process; the way the seasons govern my ratio of indoor to outdoor activity, the way the best ideas come to me directly from the sun, as filtered down through elm-leaves on my favourite trail down by the river.

To All USians who are angry when Canadians push back at your "just joking" about joining or annexing Canada, or when you say, "Invasion of Canada will never happen" think about this...

Obviously we are not the only country to feel justified with defending ourselves because NATO military chiefs had a closed door security summit in Paris and the US was not invited. Japan and Australia were there.
