the thing is that what most people want is to make it to tomorrow with a roof over their head and food on the table. Next to those considerations, matters of conscience, and the day after tomorrow, are of less immediate concern. This is the vast camp, which Garrett forgets about, of people who are probably not pro-repression but whose strongest commitment is to survival for themselves and their families.
And definitionally those people who are *not being repressed right now* are likely to benefit at least a little from repressions. Especially when there's high unemployment, resources become more scarce due to climate change... And horribly, those who *are being repressed right now* are out of the equation... I think that Garret's point (specifically about what's definitional) is not borne out by the reality and historical experience of repressive regimes. We need hope desperately, but it needs to be grounded in something other than an abstract belief that good ideals will win with some kind of mathematical inevitability.

The largest camera ever built for astrophysics (3200-megapixels, >3000 kg) was installed this week at the Rubin Observatory at Cerro Pachรณn in Chile.
The Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) camera, the final major component of the Rubin Observatory's Simonyi Survey Telescope, was transported to the summit in May 2024.

The LSST will image the entire visible sky every 3-4 nights, allowing it to detect objects that change in brightness or position and to discover billions of new stars and galaxies.

The focal plane of the Vera C. Rubin telescope consists of 189 4kx4k charge-coupled device (CCD) sensors, arranged in a total of 21 3-by-3 square arrays. The system is cooled to about -100 ยฐC to minimize noise.
The 3.5ยฐ field of view of the 64 cm wide array is 40 times the area of the full moon in the sky.

PS: I've never liked #nationalist arguments for funding or fostering science. Science is international. But the #Trump admin is putting us in a dilemma. Either we see deep cuts in US science funding. Or we use nationalist arguments to avert those cuts.
There are non-nationalist arguments to fund US science. For example, good science is usually expensive and those who do it well should be funded for the benefit of all. Update. I still don't know the full story behind the takedown of the #NelsonMemo. But here's a clue. The Dept of Defense (#DOD) continued rolling its memo-based #OpenAccess policy *after* Trump took office and *after* the memo was taken down.

One alternative is to accelerate the move of international conferences to outside of the US, but that ends up harming foreign US-based scholars here on visas, who now can't travel abroad for fear that their status will be revoked without warning at the border when they return.
Our communities should probably treat this as we did the height of the pandemic, and shift to online events.

I've spent a good chunk of my career as a remote employee, and it worked, but I don't think I got nearly as much out of online conferences as in-person ones. NDSS did have a few remote presenters this year, but it's probably not a coincidence that none of them were among the people I had follow-up conversations with.
@mattblaze @mrak it's the noncitizens living here I worry about most. The current funding situation likely makes it hard for me to get to conferences abroad, but it seems appropriate for problems caused by US policies to fall most heavily on US people -- even if I don't know any US academics who voted for this garbage.

Worth noting in my opinion is also how much harm can be done by politics to the universities in quite a short time and how long it takes to recover.
As an example: the University of Gรถttingen was one of the leading universities worldwide in mathematics, physics and chemistry until 1933, when the nazis forced more than 20% of the academics to leave. It took decades to recover to a state far from the former state.
