Join us in Cambria this Saturday 3/22 from 11am - 4pm for a pop-up trunk show at the Ball & Skein! Here are the swifts we’ll be bringing as well as our fun techie notions like our Knitting Rulers, StitchFishes, Card Gauges, and more! Let us know if there are any other things you’d like to see in person. We’ll also bring our color swatches in case you want to choose your own colors and order a custom swift there. I can’t wait to see what Annie, the new owner, has done with the shop!

The US has sent detainees to El Salvador, ignoring a court order and exposing the detainees to human rights violations.

Last year our FTP homies at The Fire These Times podcast interviewed Michael Paarlberg, associate professor of political science, on what El Salvador's system looks like, where president Nayib Bukele comes from, and how the state of El Salvador is implicated in gang violence.

Here's a fun little lathe tool @regorlas and i cooked up yesterday evening. It's a magnetic dial indicator mount made from a speaker magnet and a scrap of aluminum that we turned on the lathe using at least one sketchy process

Hey everyone, a quick update and I need to ask for your help!

I've reorganised the fedi.directory website a bit so that there is now a dedicated "News" section, have a look at:

➡️ fedi.directory/news-media

It would be nice to include as many news sources as possible, so please let me know if there is a news account you would like me to add, or a country you would like me to cover better.

Very happy to list news accounts in any language and from any country.

A new Windows update can accidentally delete Copilot assistant from a PC. As Microsoft works on a fix, some users wish the bug was an actual Windows feature. pcmag.com/news/oops-update-acc…

The image features a chandelier with six lava lamps as light sources. The chandelier is ornate, with a dark metal finish and intricate designs. Each lamp is filled with a different colored liquid, creating a vibrant display of blue, green, orange, pink, and yellow hues. The lamps are arranged symmetrically around the central fixture, with the blue lamp prominently positioned in the center. The background is a plain green wall, and the ceiling is painted a warm orange, enhancing the colorful glow of the lamps. The text overlay reads: "Wizard: Why don't you just cast a permanent spell on an object for light in your workshop? Artificer: You're so pedestrian."

I grew up in Ohio, in school we learned next to nothing about the ancient people of the region and I know more about earthworks like this in the UK than I do about the one that was not that far from where I lived. That is to some degree by design. So, I'm delighted that Milo choose this topic.

Also, we were shown (fake) "shrunken heads" as part of our unit on the early americas on a *school* field trip (which makes it sound like I grew up in the 1880s not the 1980s)

My mom was a teacher back when they had more leeway regarding their own curriculum, and was responsible for teaching about American Indians, so did teach about the Mound Builders and took me to see the earthworks, which was pretty cool.

I grew up on the outskirts of the core area of the Hopewell culture (Cincinnati metro) and have been to Newark a few times.

I was fortunate to have a 6th grade teacher during the late 1980s who taught us about indigenous culture throughout the continent, took us to local indigenous sites, and corrected the received cultural and historical inaccuracies. She was easily the most kind and impactful teacher I've had and was a clear exception on this topic from that time period.

I apologize for posting this disturbing photo from X (VG: 408K X followers), but I believe Americans need to understand the threat that Republican leaders pose.

Ever worried about other users on your Linux server seeing what processes are running? The `hidepid` kernel feature is your friend! It makes processes invisible to anyone but the owner and root user, even in system monitoring tools like ps, top, htop, and btop. This is a great way to prevent sensitive information (like API keys or passwords used in command-line arguments) from being exposed. See how to configure it cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-hide-p… for more info.

It is safer to never have them on the command line in the first place, but to put them a well secured file.

Folks who want to hold off the escalating enshitification of Roku and keep their home screen working as originally intended, i.e. a place from which to launch apps to stream video, you should block

cloudservices.roku.com

in addition to using the Smart-TV Blocklist at

perflyst.github.io/PiHoleBlock…

for various "smart TV" platforms and streaming services (not specifically Roku).

in reply to Jeff Geerling

@geerlingguy it started looking like the latter, but i think I’ve committed to try to make it the former (plus add a power supply adequate for the gpu, cooling for the gpu, and who knows what else). even though i haven’t been able to try to do anything with it yet, at least i know the gpu is recognized on the pi5!

I keep seeing pearl clutching posts about this cloud flare blog, and I'm not sure I really get it, tbh?

blog.cloudflare.com/password-r…

Are people just realizing the scale of access that a reverse proxy has to traffick it handles? Because, um, this doesn't seem notable to me. Like, sure, absolutely stop using cloud flare. It's run by absolutely garbage human beings. But if you've already decided to let a third party terminate your TLS connections, then this is the kind of thing they can and will do. If fastly or bunny or whoever doesn't do this kind of inspection and analysis, it's only because they don't think they can productize it, not because they're unable or unwilling to do so.
