You think 8 million is bad. There are 100s of millions of people in the US. That's an even bigger number. Therefore we all presumably "deserve" (and will get) even less.

Justice, which exists, and is real, is precisely the ability of a system to extend fairness to those who may appear to "deserve" it *least.* That is the test.

Failure in this is reversion beyond the rule of law.

I am saying nothing revelatory. These words feel redundant.

Marc Elias writes ‘I woke up on Saturday morning to a flood of texts and emails. Overnight, the White House had issued a memorandum directing the Attorney General to seek sanctions against lawyers challenging the administration in court. The memo begins: "Lawyers and law firms that engage in actions that violate the laws of the United States or rules governing attorney conduct must be efficiently and effectively held accountable." And it only gets worse from there. As has often been the case recently, the memo goes out of its way to attack me by name. In fact, the entire second paragraph is a long-winded screed against me, accusing me — among other things — of "grossly unethical misconduct." I wear Donald Trump's scorn like a badge of honor. The accompanying fact sheet states that the memo aims to "hold attorneys and law firms accountable for unethical conduct when litigating against the federal government or pursuing baseless partisan attacks." Unsurprisingly, it specifically calls out litigation that "threatens [...] election integrity." The memo's message is clear:’
‘scored a major victory when one of New York's largest law firms, Paul Weiss, capitulated to his administration in a humiliating settlement. Once a proud litigation powerhouse, Paul Weiss had been targeted by Trump via executive order. Rather than fight, the firm groveled its way into the Oval Office, surrendering to Trump's demands. Trump clearly believes he has momentum — at least among the nation's largest law firms. There is an expectation that having succeeded with Paul Weiss, he will soon target others. The weekend ended with news that Brad Karp, the disgraced leader of Paul Weiss, had sent an internal email justifying his firm's capitulation. The letter is as pathetic as it is poorly written. But one line, in particular, caught my attention: "But no one in the wider world can appreciate how stressful it is to confront an executive order like this until one is directed at you." My blue gray Subaru Solterra getting its first Level 3 charge at an EV charger in Rhode Island. My trunk is open and shows a bunch of plastic bins full of books and a few stray books that are too big for the boxes around. Sky is blue, trees are still bare in late March. It is an Electrify America charging station and my car is hooked to the charger.
Our lace library consists of about 500-600 lace books. Some are just pamphlets or small books, they aren't all big hardcovers. But here is the full set of books in plastic bins across the large stage at our retreat location. Most bins are stacked double because there's not enough room on the stage to have them all out. Some of the bigger bins are too heavy for that and are just single height. These were all in the back of my car.

Safe Bike Commuting Tip


Get an brightly colored pool swim noodle and mount it on your rear rack or under your seat with a bungee cord or something.

You will not believe how deferential cars and drivers will become. Nobody will yell at you. Nobody will chase you. They will give you the lane without you having to put your body in it.

It’s like magic!

The perpendicularly mounted pool noodle creates a visual representation of your lane, a bubble of safety if you will. It will also remind them that you are safety conscious and vulnerable.

I have ridden like this for over 10 years now and I would never go back. It may look ridiculous, but I’m much safer and the only comments I get from drivers is, “That’s so clever! I love it!”

It is foolish, unethical and dishonorable for anybody to appease or accommodate a fascist; for a law firm or a lawyer to do so is particularly shameful; and for a wealthy, powerful law firm it is downright scurrilous. I’m thankful for the firms and attorneys showing fortitude in the face of war Trump is waging on the legal profession, on rule of law, and on the United States’ constitutional republic. My question, as always in these cases, is what guarantees are there that this data is actually deleted?

Maybe I'm just old but... look, somebody owns the drives. "No longer visible in the public interface" isn't "deleted", somebody always owns the drives, somebody was responsible for disaster-recovery and backups, somebody was testing against a db clone on a developer machine. There is always somebody doing all of these things.

Deleting data is hard now, for real.

This. It's why I'm increasingly viewing it as "none of the data" or "all of the data", because I don't trust any of the companies to be able to delete it. There's also certainly been enough cases where there have been noted discerepancies between "what we say the policy is" and "what we do", or cases of "I'm altering the bargain, pray I don't alter it any further."

even if nobody intends to buy the drives to get the data, they'll get recycled and it won't have been anyone's job to wipe them and like a decade later @foone will post another "it has been zero days since I purchased some recycled hard drives that were full of pii" thread.

I guess that's the best case scenario.

@walnut If I were designing the youtube recs algorithm, rather than running it bespoke for each person i'd probably identify idk a couple hundred or a couple thousand "affinity buckets" and queue rec videos which i serve to anyone with the affinity

The thing the web browser wants you to think when it shows there is an update available is "oh snap, I'd better update, there might be security patches" but the thing I think now is just "oh fuck, if I install this update is Firefox going to cram AI into the browser"

Worse still, many Linux distros treat Firefox as a "system component". Therefore, updating your OS updates Firefox. Therefore, if one doesn't know how to pick and choose which "system components" are updated and which aren't, one *can't even update their OS* if they want to avoid a hostile Firefox update.

And annoyingly, the elitism suffusing the Linux community can make it very hard to find useful tech support to evade this kind of problem.
