I cannot summarize the anti-thought nature of the AI fad more clearly than to note that at the same time Firefox is forcing AI into our browsers, the Firefox spellcheck does not recognize the phrase "convolutional neural network"
in reply to mcc

that's a negative, ghost rider. The pattern is full.

MOZILLA LITERALLY DOESN'T KNOW ABOUT EXTERNALITIES. THEY REALLY ARE AN AI COMPANY NOW

another cool one it apparently doesn't know is "externalities"

governance by red wavy underline 😁 it does, on the other hand, know "gaslighting" 🤣

incredible. this rises to the level of performance art. no notes

Sorry, but this level of conversation is depressing.

The American English dictionary is based on SCOWL. You can make fun as much as you want of how incomplete it is, but I don't see a queue of people to help create this type of resources for everyone to use, freely wordlist.aspell.net/contrib/

If you really care about improving it, Firefox has its own list of words on top that people can suggest. But I'm not sure that you care, making fun of is easier.

@flod Firefox is a business. If they were not a business, then they would not need to be chasing kickbacks from OpenAI by enshrining OpenAI in a special button in the interface, or chasing kickbacks from Facebook by bundling Facebook's ad-tracking malware.

If they are a community-run project then *maybe* it makes sense to use reasoning like, help improve it and if you don't then enjoy the swill you get. But if they are a business, they can spend their fricking money on fixing the core features.

@flod Like pick one. If the org engages with the community it can invite the community to improve things when they are inadequate. But being a community focused organization means they don't get to bundle spyware for Facebook and then slap on a clickwrap EULA that's more predatory than Google's. They picked the spyware and the inexplicable IP-assignment EULA.

You're making things up when you talk about kickbacks.

Take LLMs for example: there are 5 options included (Anthropic Claude, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, HuggingChat, Le Chat Mistral), nothing selected by default. AFAIK, there are people using their own local LLM. Where's the kickback exactly?

Don't care about LLMs? No need to go into hidden settings to disable it, there is a checkbox in the sidebar setting.

But I get, nuanced conversations are not interesting.

OMG! Yes! I love convolving! The frequency domain is so much fun to play with. Did you know long multiplication is just convolution? You can do it with an FFT by multiplying the spectra of the digits. Isn’t that WILD‽

Oh wait, you mean gen AI. 🙁

"anti-thought nature" is a good term/concept/description, thank you

I wish firefox was open source so I could fix its spell check

mcc reshared this.

(this is not sarcasm, I mean I really wish they would accept my contributions instead of blaming me for wanting the software to be better)

@migratory last time i participated in a firefox bug they started deleting my posts for "advocacy" (?)
in reply to mcc

lmao similar, I will physically fight any of the people demeaning users in bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.… (and duplicates/etc., I feel like the obfuscation of spreading bugs between several reports and closing dupes is also part of the toxic dynamic)
in reply to mcc

I wonder what innovation (I can't think of a less-poisoned word right now) in spellcheck would look like

I want something that'd make a linguist go "that's a damn good spellcheck there. I like that"

in reply to mcc

firefox spellchecker sucks in general, proposition a bunch of goofy keyboard smashes more and more often.
in reply to mcc

Firefox: Error: word 'out of range'.
Please use allowed words within your class/status.

i thought the ai fad was some ploy to train nerds in techniques that would later be used in dsp, but i think it's actually gone backwards, so... i no longer believe this,
