My notes on Anthropic's substantial essay about how they built their multi-agent research system, which has finally talked me around to taking multi-agent LLM prompt engineering seriously simonwillison.net/2025/Jun/14/…
in reply to Simon Willison

I have a slight "unease" with the term "agent."

Not for the usual reasons, but because it encourages thinking of agents like we think of employees. Something you have a limited number of, difficult to hire/fire, can only do one task at a time etc.

A better way to think about them would be as (graphs of) ephemeral tasks / jobs, like in Celery, Sidekik and such. In this model, LLMs are essentially an autoscaling pool of compute that those tasks can always tap into.

This way of thinking gives you features like parallel sub-agents, checkpointing, crash recovery or surviving system migrations / power outages for almost free.

in reply to Mikołaj Hołysz

@miki I think the term "agent" is mostly unusable, because if you ask five people you'll get five different (potentially *wildly* different) interpretations, and often people will have a weird confidence that THEIR definition is the right one which everyone else shares when it isn't

In this case Anthropic opened their paper by clarifying the definition they were using ("LLMs autonomously using tools in a loop"), and I'm fine with that

One thing I *didn't* expect to be difficult about protesting, which absolutely was: My neck and shoulders hurt from holding a piece of posterboard continually. No, the sign doesn't weigh anything, but my arms sure do! I used muscles that are used to getting a pass, and I used them a lot, without a break. lol

Provides additional protection to your body as well. Probably has other drawbacks that makes it uncomfortable instead.

I am SO impressed by how today's #NoKings demonstration in #MadisonWI was organized. There was puppetry, fun things for kids of all ages, and brief big-tent speeches about the importance of standing up to authoritarianism.
I heard someone on west bound #BRT A bus saying this is like a west side reunion on this bus. It feels like half of my neighbors are on this bus. 🥰

The sadness I feel today is horrible. Fascism is alive and well. The local No Kings event was the largest ever in our small town, but it was foreshadowed by the assassination of our state legislators. I was hyper aware of any shenanigans and there were some, mainly by cowards rolling coal or flipping the bird. #nokings #melissa_hortman

A long-running U.S. investigation of MS-13 has uncovered evidence at odds with Bukele’s reputation as a crime fighter. The inquiry, which began as an effort to dismantle the gang’s leadership, expanded to focus on whether the Bukele government cut a secret deal with MS-13 in the early years of his presidency.

We had a wet spring in Fort Collins, CO. Most of my xeriscape plants grew fast and lanky. The weight of all that water, and sometimes wind, laid some stems on the ground. Now summer heat has arrived. Highs of 90°F (32°C) and cloudless skies at high altitude create intense sunlight.

Aspen fleabane (Erigeron speciosus) is rated full-sun to shade. But it seems to do best in the middle. In shade at 3pm, a perky Aspen fleabane shows off its lavender petals. Another fleabane, in bright sun, has washed out petals and many drooping flower buds.

Gardening with climate change has its challenges.

Humboldt county showed up big today.
I could only stand for an hour, but there were lots of people.
Seeing the young and old standing together in defiance of injustice and cruelty was inspiring.
I couldn't help feeling emotional.
I'm glad I went, but now I can't stop coughing so Summer and I are taking the afternoon off.
I didn't take any pictures but for a small rural community it was huge.

People kept asking me if I knew the head count, and I told them, "No, I'd need a helicopter to see the whole crowd."

Humboldt, like the rest of America did us proud. I feel sorry for Soros though, that must have cost him a fortune.

I did my best. I was happy to see so many people. My family stayed until 2.
Good job!

Thanks! I'm really proud of the whole team. I was nervous going in after what happened this week, last night, and even driving up to Eureka this morning. But it all went nearly flawless.

I decided to review the photos published by a local news source. My grandkids were front and center blocking highway 101.
Glad they are masked.

She’s an absolutely aspirational level baker, NorCalGma. 🥧 🤘🏻

Bev bakes a memorable pie too, but today she made us a glazed tart Lemon Blueberry Cake —trying it soon. I found the swoon worthy recipe out here somewhere last week and the fresh blueberries are fantastic now. It took cream cheese, yogurt and 3 sticks of butter. With two large lemons. Nom. We’re naming it the No Kings Cake.

It looked so good she carried it down to show me. 😂

@GottaLaff
We’ll have to come out and bake you one. 💜 It’s scrumptious, has a remarkable texture and is going into the preferred cake roster. Lovely tart lemon glaze. We bake a lot. Sweet teeth. Plus we’re trying to fatten my ass up, lol. And Mom likes to do her own bread every week.

Next week’s project is homemade ice cream and frozen yogurt, gave Mom a Cuisinart machine for Morher’s Day. Ben and Jerry’s is north of 5$ a pint now. Even cows are appalled.

They are clearly being raised right! Good for you for getting out there, but be careful of your health!

In Oakland, I carried my late mother’s American flag, which she had carried to many protests over the years, and my partner carried a well-photographed sign that said “The wrong ICE is melting” on one side and “ICE is best when crushed” on the other side.

DEAR AMERICAN FARMERS:

We get that you’re in a panic having realized that Trump isn’t going after criminals, just your field hands. Not to worry, that renowned labor expert, @lauraloomer says Americans will be lining up to pick your produce. When you stop laughing, thank her in person. You can find her somewhere in Donald Trump’s underwear.

in reply to Shoq

It's beyond horrible. When they follow the Nazi-playbook further, they have a cruel plan: They indeed will make Americans work in the fields. If those want or not. For example their political opponents, the dems, the left, the Antifa... It's how it's started once in my country. First they threw the left in the "work camps"...
They officially wanted to "deport" the jews, before deciding the "Endlösung"...
I hope Americans find a way to get rid of these fascists, before it gets worse.
