An evening of reading can help you unwind and prepare for the next day. What's on your reading list tonight?

pretty good book so far!

I’m still not ready to do livestreaming. I’m far too tired, and need another night to rest. So I’m cancelling my livestream tonight that was scheduled from 7-9:00pm.

BUT--I’ll be trying something new tomorrow. A daytime livestream from 1-3:00pm. More info coming!

My sincerest apologies to all. I just need one more night to recharge my batteries. I’ll be refreshed tomorrow.

JFC the basic core of human society is that we look after each other, tens of thousands of years ago those of us out berry picking and hunting shared everything with the old, the injured and the young, not everyone can work to survive, so we share with them. it's like basic human 101. fucks sake. aargh

isn't there some million year old human skeleton with a healed broken leg, so they must have been cared for and loved and looked after even though they were no longer able to hunt or whatever
in reply to saraaaaargh

I seriously doubt our distant ancestors allowed one of their own to horde all the berries, take everyone elses berries, and then they all stood around going "wow what a genius" while starving to death

"Bring your whole self to work!"

Given that I exist in several universes, a goodly number of star systems, numerous continents, and at least two Waffle Houses, I'm not sure there's enough space at work for all of me. Or I should say, for all versions of me.

Maybe we could try time sharing this body.

I remember that I missed parts of an extended discussion a while ago using mastodon's standard web UI and it looked like #PhanpySocial showed more (transitive) answers. But is it actually possible to solve this problem purely on the client side?
in reply to Heribert Schütz

Yes it is, you can already manually pull in all the public parts of a discussion by opening the thread's "original page" and then copy-pasting the URLs of all the replies into the search box on your instance. This is very tedious so no one does this, but there's nothing to stop a client or script or instance doing it automatically.

I am not a dev but AFAIK the main holdup has been how to do this efficiently without causing strain on instances.

just read about yet another tesla crash/fire resulting the passengers being trapped with doors that wont open. A $30 'life hammer' (thats a brand name but also the generic name) solves some of this - you can bust the window and cut the seatbelt in a few seconds.

Seriously, its one of those motoring accessories you can't afford not to have. The life you hammer might be your own.

in reply to Adam

I think I paid around $7 for something similar at a discount store. Though I am now wondering what became of it (I went without a car for 7+ years and now that I have a new vehicle, haven't put one of those in my newer vehicle). It also had a flashlight and a needle sort of thing (for popping a deployed airbag).

The government is pretty much shut down right now, asshole! I fail to see how a shutdown could make it any worse. And maybe it would get the #Dems to actually grow a collective spine and stop obeying in freaking advance.

I just finished A Pail of Air by Fritz Leiber over at Project Gutenberg. It's great post apocalyptic tale about earth thrown into a deep freeze after a rogue Star tears the planet from its orbit. There's not a lot of action but the world building is phenomenal. I'd love to read more stories set in this universe. #scifi #pulp #apocalypse #ProjectGutenberg

Some good news about #Mastodon, there has been a very significant bit of code added which will automatically fetch all the replies in a thread. This means everyone will be able to see a thread's whole conversation no matter which server they are on! 🥳

The code has just been "merged" which means it should become available in the next update to Mastodon, hopefully within the next few months.

(Those who want the technical details can see the Pull Request at github.com/mastodon/mastodon/p…)

in reply to Sven A. Schmidt

That’s fine and normal and I’ll be happy to wait until it shakes out. I think this is the correct direction. Partial reply threads one of the pain points of Fediverse discourse.
in reply to Dave Rahardja

Yeah, this is normal for all major new features. They test them on an experimental branch before they are actually released more widely.

Using the shell command in CAD software might seem like an easy way to hollow out a model for 3D printing, but it often leads to inconsistent wall thickness and print artifacts. This post explains why the shell command falls short and introduces a more precise manual modeling approach to achieve uniform, high-quality prints.

US voters:

Call your Senators ASAP and tell them:

- Do not allow the GOP budget to come up for a vote

- We are not fooled if you bring your own budget up first, knowing it will fail. Do NOT allow the Republican budget to pass. Period. Do NOT rescue them.

5/ More from Josh:

The point of this to temporarily confuse the issue so that Senate Ds can say they vote for their version while allowing the GOP version to pass. The critical point is that it's handing the GOP the 60 vote threshold for nothing.

Infuriating! I've made more Senate calls in the pat few weeks than at any time in my life.

Seems delusional to think that normal processes are still underway.

Another not-random question for #bookstodon - has anyone done modern reviews of classic middle school aged series like Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew or similar looking at how/if they are dated and likely problematic? (I assume they are, I read a bunch of them when I was that age but it was 40ish years ago and I don’t remember much about them)

Broadly as a service for parents today looking for discussion about which classics have stood the test of time and remain good and which haven’t aged well.

in reply to Wandering Hermit

@wanderinghermit exactly. My question was prompted by seeing multiple people selling long runs of the books in local marketplace listings (seemingly in some cases fairly recent printings by appearance - or basically never read) but before I bought them for my son I wanted to see if anyone had been going back to such series and reviewing them with a modern eye.

(And likewise curious what classics have stood the test of time - The Phantom Tollbooth was still great when I read it to my son)

in reply to Shannon Clark

On a (slightly) related note, I've been reading Lawrence Block's Evan Michael Tanner series from the late '60s. While there are a few cringe moments, they've aged surprisingly well and are a fascinating look into the geopolitical issues of the time and the changes we take for granted.

I find it interesting what is happening to the polls in Canada.

What looked like an upcoming comfortable victory for The Conservatives has changed dramatically after the inauguration of Trump.

Should the Liberals end up winning the election later this year, the US president would be facing the new leader of the Liberal Party, Mark Carney.

We would then see the chaos president Trump fighting a trade war against a calculated, educated and experienced economist who has lead central banks.

in reply to Randahl Fink

Canada is under threat of Trump, not the American people
If Trump decides to act tuff and uses the Military ?
It will be a turning point
Will our, what is left of a professional fighting force, say no, and not act on Trumps orders ?
Other third world countries have come to this impasse
Soldiers obey their superior officers
The Chain of command ?
What will happen ?
Trump is insane
Insanity is dangerous
It is also a disability & to its own peril, a weakness
Morons are bad Commanders !
in reply to Randahl Fink

I hope European people also see and understand where far right, fascism and nationalism leads to.

Wait, a few Dems are actually doing something?

I love how international standards create reliable guarantees of interoperability between different items created in different countries with different languages. For instance, I recently ordered a specific piece of technical equipment and despite the fact that the listing was most likely not written by someone for whom English is their first language, it was easy enough to see that it clearly supported ISO whatever, so it would definitely work with my existing system based on that same standard. Easy to order long distance and wait for it to be loaded onto a container ship and travel across the Pacific Ocean sight unseen, just based on a spec list. When it arrives with literally zero label, documentation, marking, or in fact any text at all, I can just hook it up and oh come the heck on it doesn't even support ISO whatever, only a couple of the related similar standards also listed in the specs? What the heck, seriously? Ugh, time to start over I guess.
in reply to Tilde Lowengrimm

Same in the software side. I write code to download data from a couple of dozen sites all supposedly compliant with the same international standards. My code is full of "if-then" statements to handle how different sites implement the standards in different ways. None of which is documented, of course.
