I really need to do a special on weird sky-omens one day - German folklore has a _lot_ to choose from in this regard!

So many tales, so little time for translation...

Suggestions welcome. I like fiction of all genres, especially Gothic, Fantasy, Horror, Historical, with vivid interesting settings.

IMPORTANT YARD UPDATE: Holy crap, my little ornamental kales are taking OFF *and* my cactus is perking back up with a few new sprouts on it. The lavender shrub is, well, it's hanging on...kind of. It still smells lavendery, so there's a chance?

From this afternoon's hike ... I wasn't planning to go out on the trails, but the conditions were really good, decent traction, no mud, so I ended up walking close to 9 miles. Very therapeutic to just spend a few hours out in nature!

Tonight's Low Quality Ad is for the Kamrui N95 Mini PC. Did you know that the first Mini PC was created by Disney in 1928? Walt Disney used the tiny computer to design Minnie Mouse, hence her name.

I'm not admitting to knowing this, but There's something about Mary ... Cameron Diaz.

@clolsonus Gotta admit, the hair in that image does make a compelling case.

But if that's the case, it really breaks with the rest of the "businesses" which are about something the character(s) actively does (e.g. The Blues Brothers driving through the mall).

Bad idea: boot a diskless (no floppy or HD) 5150 into DOS.

How? No, not the cassette port. The only other port. The keyboard!

We make a PC/XT protocol keyboard that writes a small stub and then copies DOS into RAM (with a ramdisk, natch) through the keyboard port.

Two places where the Grand Portage hiking trail crosses the old LS&M railroad route (late 1800's vintage.) Sadly in one spot someone had pulled up and dumped a load of garbage. Some people really suck. 🙁 Getting that feeling more often than I'd like lately. 🙁

“Unnecessary” Automation of a DIY Star Lamp Build

Ok, here we go... A glimpse of my daughter's 5th grade homework. 🤣

This is what the 3d probe currently looks like. The stack height is 14 mm with the springs compressed to what I think is the right working pressure. I'm cutting the housing right now.
Designed in #freecad printed in PLA.
I have a neat idea for a clamp tool so I can push the probe body solidly against the bearings for swapping probe tips. It's just a wedge, tbh.
in reply to smellsofbikes

is this related to your 'mercury question' recently?

I like this, but don't know what I'm looking at.

in reply to poleguy looking for lost tools

@poleguy yeah. The center bit will have a probe tip sticking downward and all this is held in a container that clamps in my mill spindle. When the probe tip touches anything in +/-x or y or -z it will lose contact on one of the conducting surfaces and signal the CNC mill that it just hit an edge. This will let me quickly and accurately locate hole centers and work edges/corners. I was trying to figure out how to wire to bearing balls. As it happens, standard electrical solder works fine.

Well this is a charming little thing I've been meaning to make for years and finally got around to printing. It's two concentric eccentrics (with little pins so I can adjust the eccentrics) and lets me position the hole at any point within the outer eccentric. I've been meaning to use something like this for microadjusting worms to wormgears. Now I have to figure out how to make it clamp so it doesn't shift in use.
It works quite well. Designed in #freecad printer in PLA.

I had to drop out of that one-hour presentation after two hours — there were a lot of questions keeping the conversation going far longer than planned. A good thing! ☺

in reply to Michael K Johnson

No problem, I got my license as well only one year ago, so lots to learn as well ;)

yes, it is less important for HF, due to the propagation via the ionosphere. since the reflextion will change the polariasation randomly. But as long, as it is still groundwave propagation, polarization matters.

in reply to Lucas

@DA1EE Well I was looking for an excuse to add a JPC-7 as well as my PAC/JPC-12 to my kit — now I realize that I want to have both the horizontal dipole and vertical ground plane (virtual dipole) antennas!

And that will give me extra coils so I can work 80m from parks, so an extra win! 😁

We’re not your friends, fascists!

Now what (or whom) would possess an “ally” to intentionally degrade a friendly weapons systems in advance of a future attack? Asking for #Ukraine this time.

Heh, that would be the one thing they focus on, wouldn’t it?

We need a term that’s like “bikeshedding” except it means fixating on a non-urgent side conflict while ignoring an immediate crisis.

in reply to Paul Cantrell

Great idea! Home made signs are always better than pre-printed signs, especially if those signs contain the name of some group with whom you don't necessarily agree on everything.
