When we released post editing for #Mastodon, we first released a version that supported processing and displaying edits incoming from other servers, before releasing a version that flipped a switch allowing anyone to make edits. We're taking an identical approach with quote posts, as the upcoming 4.4 version of Mastodon will begin displaying quote posts from other servers and software. Once this is widely deployed on the network, 4.5 will bring the long awaited ability to quote posts.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

But you will add our ability to prevent anyone quote posting us? You are destroying one of the major elements that made #mastodon peaceful.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Many years ago on Twitter I was quote posted and then blocked by the current US president. It was not a fun experience.

Is the Mastodon implementation better? For example by always allowing a top level comment from the quoted account? And by the quote-post disappearing when the quote poster blocks the quoted account?

@waystation

in reply to Eugen Rochko

@waystation Except it looks like the implementation is opt out rather than opt in, which isn't what was promised.
in reply to Richard

@waystation and the ability to hide quote-posts, in the same way we can hide boosts
in reply to Alex, the Hearth Fire

Looks like you will be able to filter quote posts like you do with other filters. @shlee, in this reply thread, showed where you can prevent your posts from being quote posted.

@paul Nothing in the link you've posted appears to "show where you can prevent your posts from being quote posted." It only appears to show how you can filter quote posts so you can't see them (but everyone else can). Did you intend to add a second link to your post?

@WizardOfDocs @waystation @Gargron @shlee

in reply to Tokyo Outsider (337ppm)

@tokyo_0 it's not in that link. That part is in this thread. Start it over from the top post to see it. Or,

The setting in my v4.4.0 instance is under Profile preferences>Other

Here is an actual screengrab of it.

@WizardOfDocs @waystation @shlee

in reply to Paul Chambers🚧

@paul Thank you for this — appreciate you taking the time to attach the screenshot, as well 🧡

Personally I think not including "no one" as an option (always allowing those mentioned to quote) is a mistake, and at odds with at the very least the spirit of what's been said previously. I think a lot of quote abuse situations develop out of discussions where people are tagged. But that's a separate point to what you were saying 🙏

@WizardOfDocs @waystation @shlee

in reply to Eugen Rochko

I recently discovered this option that I can choose who can quote my toots, but there is no option to disable it completely, I have to allow at least mentioned people to quote me - why is that?
TBH, as a person that was against quote toots from the beginning I'm not happy about the way it was implemented (if that's the final approach ofc)
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Makes sense. I can't wait to quote this post when it's released 😂

Finally! --The long overdue #QuotePosts will be phased in on #Mastodon:

@HistoPol Mastodon.Social, your instance, has been on 4.4 for a long time. You should have already been seeing them displaying from other servers... Curious if you had been.
in reply to Paul Chambers🚧

@paul

Hi Paul,thanks.
I have not noticed any relevant "layout change" regarding quotes, neither in my app, nor in the browser version.

Apart from that, why does @Gargron write, "...as the upcoming 4.4 version of Mastodon will begin displaying..." Its tempus clearly relates to the future, not the present...🤔

in reply to HistoPol (#HP) 🏴 🇺🇸 🏴

@HistoPol 4.4 has been out for a while in nightly and now beta. You are on it now and have been for several months as test subjects on Mastodon.Social. Other instances installed it, also. I've been meaning to install it for a couple months. I'm going to install it a little later today since it was released today in beta and not nightly.

I was just curious if their was a noticeable change.

@Gargron

I think the tempus is actually referring to the actual official version release for all instances and is simply software dev speak.

in reply to Paul Chambers🚧

@paul @HistoPol well it's not the actual 4.4, it's just a nightly of the branch that will eventually become 4.4 so it does not have all the features that the final 4.4 will. Of course another reason you might not be seeing it yet even in the case that the code has been added is that it might still be disabled on the instance for now.
in reply to Paul Chambers🚧

@paul We bump the version as soon as the previous version gets a Release Candidate, so mastodon.social displayed a 4.4 version since last October.

Ingesting remote quote posts is behind an experimental flag that has not yet been enabled on mastodon.social, but it should be very soon.

@HistoPol @Gargron

in reply to Renaud Chaput

@renchap That's why I was curious if anyone had seen it yet. I hadn't seen any posts about it in the past but have heard about other changes here and there that came along. Thanks.

@HistoPol @Gargron

in reply to Mastodon Migration

@mastodonmigration that's why I was curious.

As one poster pointed out, dev branches change often. Today was truly the first beta pre-release and i with a second beta planned next week then I think an alpha version coming out and eventually the stable version.

Can you go to your profile settings and see if the option to turn off quote posts is there? Curious if it is, esp if you aren't seeing any

@paul

THX Paul, however, I'm using Tusky most of the time.
There, there is no Other, but a long list of several screens, which I've checked.

@mastodonmigration

in reply to HistoPol (#HP) 🏴 🇺🇸 🏴

FYI, with Tusky, to reach those Profile preferences and certain other profile settings, I am almost certain you will need to log in to your account on the web through the browser. For you, that would be Mastodon.Social directly.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

does other servers/software have this feature actually? I'm only aware of a client side implementation that resolves "RE: %URL%"

Or is it that, what mastodon will also do?

in reply to Eugen Rochko

This is awesome. I'll often see something but want to give my own take on it so I'll have to manually copy and paste the link into a new post, which seems duplicative. Really looking forward to this, 🙂
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Hopefully we won't have to wait that long for 4.5. Is there a minimum percentage of deployed 4.4 installations that will trigger the 4.5 release?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Quote posting is coming to #Mastodon in 4.5. Remembering how @Gargron was always against it...
in reply to Eugen Rochko

woo! but will translation return? it seems to have disappeared.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

hopefully not too long between 4.4 and 4.5, I’m gonna get sick of being ratioed by folks with quote posts without being able to return the favor ;)
in reply to Eugen Rochko

i really hope I can hide quote posts from my main timeline like boosts and favourites. I think it pollutes the timeline, and it takes up precious screen time to scroll past them.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Fine with me. I don't use quote posts anyways, but having them render properly would be nice.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

My number 1 use case for social media is wanting to curate and annotate content such as news articles and book reviews. I'm really looking forward to this feature!
in reply to Eugen Rochko

sometimes I wonder what can we learn from #Twitter or even #Bluesky in terms of social medias like it.. quote posting, I think I'm fine with it, I just saw that it *could* be worse if implemented like in Twitter, I do hope that at least, since switching microblogging IS easier than like #Youtube or #Twitch it can finally build a sizable space in the internet.

Is Quoting Posts a way? Yeah, I think so, but also like.. a bunch, I can't remember it on the top of my head.. Welp, that's life

in reply to Eugen Rochko

I know, it was a tough choice to change something that was kind of part of Mastodon's original concept and even tougher, to implement it in a responsible and fair way, but yes:

I am very sure, it will improve the platform a lot.

Thanks for all the work and especially for changing your mind (I know, how hard that can be)!

😘

in reply to Eugen Rochko

Nice! With quote posts, I'll have everything I wanted on Masto.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

the original rational for prohibiting quote boosts, that people would abuse it and use it for dunking on others, was wrong to begin with. Literally anything can be abused and put to a malign purpose. Well done on this course correction. And may those who would abuse it be promptly blocked and reported.
